hi folks.

I am thinking about hiring a Motorbike/Scooter while over there in October. I don't mean in Pattaya as not much need for it but ill be visiting Isaan for a few days and reckon it could be handy there seeing as my friend already has a motorbike there herself and i dont really want to ride pillion all the time.

I do not intend to use it for long journeys just for pottering about between the hotel and the village she is from.

My question is about licenses.

I have a full UK Car Drivers licence and have had it for 20+ years ( with Moped eligibility) but have never bothered to take my Motorbike license test.

I intend to get my CBT anyway but wont have time to pass my Motorbike license in full until after my holiday. Will the CBT and my Car drivers license be enough for hiring a Geared Scooter or a 125cc?

Thailand does has a license requirement for riding a motorcycle (motor Bike).

I always get an International Vehicle License before I go to Thailand.

In the U.S. I get my international license from AAA and they will only certify that which is on my license issued by the state where I live which is Texas.

Additionally, if the authorities in the country you are visiting follow their rules, they will compare your international license to your license from your home authorities.

If you are going to be in Thailand for at least 1 year, you are elgible to apply for a motorbike license in Thailand.

Just a note of caution, if you decide to ride a motorbike without having a license, the boys in brown do ocassionally have roadblocks for the sole purpose of checking if the driver has a motorbike license. :D

Thanks for the reply. Guess i am just legal for a 50cc Moped then. Bit naff but will do for pottering about i guess. Certainly don't want to be worrying bout getting legal or medical insurance grief while i am over there.

Just have to look into getting the full License for motorbikes later in the year for my next trip.

Basic rule of the road is you crash it you pay for it licence or no licence - you injure someone you also pay for it - someone hits you while drunk you pay for it - the rules have no bearing on whether you hold a licence or not - you are farang you will pay -

I would'nt worry about the Police, drive safely and expect everyone to do what you'd not expect them to do - you'll be fine.

The person that introduced the combustion engine to Asia should be shot.

If the Thai's could drive like they walked and walk like they drive, the country would be an idyllic place to live
