One-stop service via Europe typically yields the shortest total travel time but this is of course dependent on individual timetables and connection alignment. You'll also pay a lot more for this routing. One-stop service via the Pacific will likely yield slightly longer travel times, and be less expensive. You really ought to find a Consolidator who specializes in Asian travel markets.

For U.S. carriers operating to Asia generally speaking there are four (4) "seasons":

L 2JAN-23MAY OR 5SEP-20NOV

K 24MAY-6JUN, 21AUG-4SEP OR 21NOV-5DEC

H 7-13JUN, 3JUL-20AUG, 6-12DEC OR 24DEC-1JAN

P 14JUN-2JUL OR 13-23DEC

from lowest (L) to "shoulder" (K) to high (H) to peak (P). Dates are approximate and vary year to year. You usually will see these characters (L/K/H/P) in the fare basis code (in the second space). Further Mon-Thu (X) travel (departure) is less expensive than Fri-Sun (W). Again you see the W (weekend) and X (not weekend) characters in the fare basis code.

The QPX engine at http://matrix.itasoftware.com/ is highly regarded re: published, available fares.

Check Emirates, flight arrives in Dubai at 6am or so and then onto another one straight to NYC if I am not mistaken.

Not sure about NY but Emirates to UK is bl**dy expensive these days! Also difficult to get seats BKK to Dubai.

You are right but all major carriers are bloody expensive to Europe at the moment.

Why don't you look it up yourself...doa yahoo or google search for Orbitz or some similar on-line travel agency.

The cheapest I saw on Orbitz...for example was this:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

$1,439 + $327 taxes & fees = $1,766 per person

Tue, Jul 15 Etihad Airways 401

Depart: 8:40pm Bangkok, Thailand (BKK)

Arrive: 11:55pm Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (AUH)

1 stop Economy 6hr 15min Boeing 777

Change planes

Time between flights: 2hr 10min

Etihad Airways 101

Depart: 2:05am Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (AUH)

New York, NY (JFK) Arrive: 8:30am

Economy 14hr 25min Airbus A340

Total duration: 22hr 50min

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Lomg trip...but what do you expect?

Cathay has direct flights to NY but I don't know if their prices are competitive or not.

I've just been checking Cathay web site and they gave me a return fare of $1882.90 inc taxes (JFK-BKK via Hong Kong) for August travel this year.

I am not intending to travel again until next year so just threw in a few dates to see what came up, I have a young family so want to avoid too many stop-overs or long waits between flights. I was intending to use the Thai airways flight from JFK but now that has gone I am looking for alternatives. Previously I have traveled on BA as I am in Bermuda and they have a direct flight to Gatwick arriving early morning and then I would get the Late flight direct to BKK having spent the day in a hotel day room. This worked great with the kids but is now becoming very expensive.

From what I can see at the moment Cathay looks a good alternative.

Your best best is to try one of the local 'bucket' shops. Often overworked and cranky, but usually the best fares around, no matter what class your ticket. I use TVAir at Emporium. Cheapest would be something like China Airlines or Philippine Airlines flight to LAX and then an Airtran flight to New York. Nothing saves money like a couple of flights on airlines with relatively poor safety record histories, and manually hauling your bags to another terminal after customs.

I prefer Singapore Airlines direct though, myself.

BKK-NRT-IAD roughly $1300 rt on UAL, then get a quick hop on Jet Blue for $100 r/t

That "roughly" appears to be a one-way price, NKK-NRT-IAD on UA.

Of course everything depends on the exact travel dates and length of stay but Air China, Etihad, Emirates and Korean Air seem to have the lowest prices. Etihad appears to have the shortest overall travel times, factoring in both outbound and return.
