Hi, I'm Risa and I am from the US. I will be going to Thailand for two weeks soon and I was wondering if there were any types of really good, healthy dishes that were not spicy that I can order in restaurants. If you can, please tell me what it consists of as well as how to say it in Thai.

Thank you very much!

There are quite a few Thai dishes which are not so spicy, ranging from the ubiquitous noodle soup (at thousands of noodle stands, everywhere) to rice soup (breakfast), to stir-fried vegetables in oyster sauce, to chicken with cashews, to pad thai. But if you make some effort, you can quickly get accustomed to spicier dishes, and then the full range of Thai cuisine in all its glory will become accessible to you.

Try the papaya salad (pronounced SOMTAM)..basically finely chopped pappaya, tomato, carrot, lime juice, nuts, fish sauce and a few thai ingrediants...the secret with all dishes is to say MY PET....this means not spicy in Thai, and can be applied to almost all dishes, steamed rice is everywhere (COW BLAU), you have all the seafood, ask for it barbequed rather than fried, the rice soup is tasty (COW TOM)..spicy prawn soup (TOM YAM GUNG) is delicious, but remember that key word..MY PET, and you should find lots of delicious healthy food, as in touristy areas, all menus are in English.

Enjoy your holiday, and remember to say my pet as a tagline to every main course, and you should be happy with the result :o
