We're thinking of driving down to Krabi for a few days (for a change!) - have never been there before. We're not looking for beaches and bathing (we got that in Phuket) and we're no spring chickens either, so was thinking of basing ourselves in Krabi Town and then driving out to various places from there.

Any thoughts on Krabi town - nice restaurants, bars?? for the evening. Good location for a couple of 50 somethings?

having just returned from 5 days down there am sure you will enjoy.Only stayed 1 night in krabi town and i liked it.there are plenty of cheap guest houses for about 400-600 baht a night, nothing flash but ok.Did n't see any 4 or 5 star hotels but did see more upmarket thai hotels. There are western restaurants/bars all near the customs house/pier.Krabi is more a destination for back packers, however i am your age and i had fun, stayed at a place called gooddream guest house(400baht a night with a/c..........just a basic room. The guest house has bar and food menu, big plus i found was that you got 2 hours free internet access per day of stay. From Krabi town you can drive down to koh lanta and out to Ao Nang which i liked,a very small version of patpong.hope you have a good time.

For lunch or early dinner (they close 7pmish) go down to Tara park, on the water about 1/2 to 1 km west of the main night market at the pier. Go into Pee Dam's, the western most restaurant in a row of 4 or 5. Order the hoy chak teen, the chicken nam tok, and whatever else takes your fancy (but you really must order those two) and you'll be happy.

I'm down there pretty regularly and prefer Ao Nang to Krabi Town. Poster who made the analogy of Phuket town, to one of the beach locals in Phuket was spot on.

There is a nice reasonable bungalow scenario across from the MacDonalds in Ao Nang. Ao Nang Terrace Viilage, or Terrace Resort, green sign anyway. Kuhn Bo is owner operator. 500thb for his bungalow rooms, 750 for the terrace rooms with balconey. Walking distance to everything. Walk toward the water and in front of the minimart notice the geow tiao guy. Tasty big bowls of geow tiao for 25thb.

Thanks all. Trying to think if we would want to spend evenings in Phuket Town and I think the answer is probably no - so may take a look at Ao Nang - well that'll be just for the evenings anyway as we want to drive around a bit.

There is one superb hotel that i know of, i haven't stayed there but is highly recomended and i drive past it all the time. The Maritime Hotel and Spa.(www.maritimeparkandspa.com). This is certainly the best in Krabi Town and they will be able to show you the best places in Krabi Town. It is true that there is much more in Ao Nang. Although one place to eat is Baan Ton Kao (www.bantonkao.com) in between krabi town and ao nang. Huge gardens with lakes and traditional thai boats etc. either way there is plenty of good places to goto if you have a car...

I know in a lot of places in the world that, if you book a hotel room walking in off the street, you don't get such a good rate as booking through an agency or on the internet. I'm presuming that, in a smallish resort like Krabi, this doesn't apply, but can anyone confirm that?

Things to do in Krabi town:

>> Stay on the river at the Krabi River Hotel and watch the sun rise and the longtail boats

>> Get a Thai massage from the fabulous Ausa at First Lady Massage (behind the big Siam Commercial Bank)

>> take a longtail boat from the pier out to Railey and spend the afternoon marveling at the beauty

>> visit the Tiger Temple and climb the stairs

>> eat at the night market next to the pier

>> visit the Cave Temple (on the road to Ao Luk)

>> hire a longtail for a river tour and stop at a fish farm

>> visit the Muslim village on the island across the river

There's actually quite a bit more to do and many good places to eat but most of it is not typical "tourist" fare
