The above is the link for download of a very good add on for Firefox. It displays the rating in various categories of websites/hot links. It could save you seeing that red unsafe sign before clicking.

That's great. Thanks for that Lop!

Just that everybody know what that Add On is doing:

WOT, Web of Trust, warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. Protect your computer against online threats by using WOT as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 20 million websites - green to go, yellow for caution and red to stop – helping you avoid the dangerous sites. Surf safer and add WOT to your Firefox now.

Cheers

Sorry for the cynicism, but this kind of reminds me of the US terrorism alerts... Today is a yellow alert? Today is a red alert? How should I act differently?

Maybe I'm missing something, but doesn't it ultimately come down to:

  • This site is OK
    or
  • This site is going to attempt to do bad things and you shouldn't browse here

I appreciate the intent of the plugin, but i think a sliding scale of "Trustworthiness, Vendor reliability, Privacy and Child Safety" will quickly lose value. What do you do when you get on sites that are around 50% for these values?

Look at the rating for Thai Visa, would you agree with them? Giving what's out there on the web, would you consider TV to have the lowest possible score for child safety? Mediocre ratings for trustworthiness, reliability & privacy?

I think noscript is the Number 1 security addon you should install for Firefox

even something you consider a trusted site can be unknowingly serving up up ads containing malicious javascript.

Thats true. Never browse without NoScript. It's simply the best!

The main use of this is for Google search - you know immediately what others think of the sites listed and this can cut your time down considerably. I have found the ratings very accurate, including the child ratings. For TV there is not that big a database. For some there is none. But it shows that. I have been using for several weeks and find it more useful each day. I agree it can only be as good as the people who use it - but so far I have been impressed.

But quite a few porn sites get a 'red' rating ... not because they are malicious but not child safe ... so before avoiding a porn website ... see why it's red rated.

Strange. The WOT icon is now working, so I tried to register and it worked. :o

Wow, noscript blocked me from replying here, till I allowed it.

I haven't been having any problems but I figured I would DL it anyway. If it gets to cumbersome I will get rid of it.

Anyway I was just going to post that a tekkie friend suggested McAfee Site Advisor, its free, and has a similar function as the subject of this thread.

Just installed McAfee Site Advisor - excellent! Turn on the "Highlight search results links" setting to get colourised Google results.
