Gulf Communities Face Devastation

Featured Replies

Was anyone here in the islands back in 1989, when Typhoon Gay struck the local area?

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm hearing more and more hype about this from my neighbors in BangNa & Samut Prakan.

"Go stock up on food and water"

WDYT?

Comment in the same Article: "...not anytime soon..."!

Well, one reason why I would NOT "invest" in ANY beach property...

Good, to sit on the mountain.

Not any time soon..... how soon, is not any time soon?

But it is logical.

Ice melts, water rises.

But are we thinking logical here in thailand, or anywhere else in this world?

They had the technology to make cars in masses, which drives on hydrogen since the '80s (BMW).

But there was still oil;

and money to make,

and now it's a little late,

wouldn't you think!? :o

just told my missus the world ends next week and can i go out,get sloshed and have a bg,she said no.i wonder why lol.

Yeah....far too late.... I heard that the world will end next week........ :o

Shouldn't we all be thinking of building an Ark or two? There are a few coconut trees left to start building. :D :D

This is not going to affect us, apparently we are to far away from glaciers.

Sounds like a bummer :o

Koh Phangan and Koh Samui weren't damaged too badly but the eye passed over Koh Tao and Chumphon took a direct hit. I remember photos of Chumphon and everything was totally flattened. It took the government a week to get aid into the area.

According to Wikipedia:

During the landfall in Thailand, Gay claimed at least 458 lives, also more than 600 seamen were reported missing. Two hundred fishing vessels were lost.

And I recall an oil drilling ship out in the Gulf was turned upside down with a loss of 91 lives on board. There was plenty of warning to pull up and move but the company delayed in the hopes the typhoon would change direction, I believe it was a cost measure decision.

I was here for it, and while scary, there was no storm surge on the beach where I live. In fact, the tide was out quite far.

So, yes, indeed, it was a bummer.
