A poster on another thread asked about Thai words for math. OK, I'll give it a shot with my crappy Thai skills!

I'm a retired UK maths teacher trying to help my Thai stepdaughter with her maths homework. Language is a bit of a barrier and there are so many alternative Thai words for what I want to say I am a bit confused. Can you tell me which Thai words you use for: add, subtract, multiply, divide, decimal, decimal point, fraction, numerator, denominator, separate, together, answer, together with a few examples if possible, or else refer me to an online source I could use?

Thanks for your time.

Add - บวก - buaak - verb - mathematical addition; to add; plus

Subtract - ลบ - lohp - verb - mathematical subtraction; minus

Multiply - คูณ - khuun - verb - mathematical multiplication; "times"; to multiply

Divide - หาร - haan - verb - mathematical division; to divide; divided by

Fraction - now that's a tough one, because in my very limited knowledge there is no word for fraction. What you can do is describe the fraction. Here's an example:

หนึ่งในสี่ - neung nai see - the fraction ¼; one-quarter OR

เศษหนึ่งส่วนสี่ - saeht neung uaan see - the fraction ¼; one quarter

I do know that the word for numerator is เศษ - saeht

This is a start. I hope that those whose language skills are better than mine can correct any errors I may have made and add to the list.
