Rights To Access Certain Services

Hi all,

I'm putting a lot of thought into moving over to Bangkok at the moment. I've been linving in Taiwan for the last 2 years and I was in Japan before that- in both of these countries it is virtually impossible for foreigners to access certain services. I like it here in Taiwan but I can't even get a land line in my home without a guarantor..the same goes for mobile contracts, credit cards, and more recently , I'm not allowed to get a local driving lisence- a mortgage? forget it! I am very well paid but this means nothing to them.

I'm curious as to the situation in Thailand- which I Beleive to be a little more foreigner freindly.

Any insight?

About the same and you can not buy any land with or without a mortgage.  But you may be able to get a drivers license.  :o

i noticed that Bangkok Bank say that they will issue credit services to foreigners who have the right vis and a six month history showing that htey earn over a certain ammount (the numbrs are pretty low but ive already forgetten). They also dont seem to mind offering mortgages.

Could this be bullshit?

I'm not sure the about mortgage, but no problem with mobile contract, local driving license.

Since you are well paid, then shouldn't be any problem with credit card as well. For example Citibank (more stringent requirements compare to other banks) silver master card, you will need to show visa, work permit, at least THB80,000 monthly income.

Yes. bull, foreigners are not alowed to buy property in Thailand unless bought through a holding company. as for services in OP I had no problems getting a land line installed, mobiles are generally on a pay as you go basis, and you can get license to drive no problem but I wouldn't recommend it they are all mad over here and can't drive to save their lives, driving over here just costs you a bundle in handouts

It may surprise you that Taiwan is far worse for driving than thailand could ever hope to be.

I wasn't asking for advice; I was asking for facts. however, I do apreciate the information that you guys have so kindly given.

As for the driving thing: The right lane? not likely! not even the correct side of the road mate. I know becasue I've experienced the driving in both countries quite extensively- people are taught NOT to indicate here as that will result in you being cut off, and not one Taiwanese driver has ever used a mirror for anything other than to watch themselves pic their noses. Although I will concede that the flow of traffic in bangkok is far worse than Taipei.

Thanks again to those who have submitted helpful replies.
