I'm coming back to Bangkok in December. I am also looking to buy a mini laptop to bring with me. I am wondering. How easy it will be to get FREE Wifi in and around Bangers. When i say FREE. I dont mind buying a coffee if i can use the internet there. Any info appreciated.

How about totally FREE with no coffee?

There was one open Wifi, and pretty sure you could pick up the signal if you sit on one of the Au Bon Pain table, or even outside the building.

Try to get an access to the Green Bangkok Wifi:

Cool. Do you know if there is something similar in Chiang Mai?

lots and lots of places, however with the new law regarding logging of all internet activity, be prepared to have your passport on you as it will become required to be able to get access.

Not exactly enforceable especially with the amount of open wifi hot spots around the city.

Having an open wifi access point will in fact be illegal! Fines up to 500,000 Baht.

Guess it won't be long before the coppers will find netstumbler and go war driving :o

Teasted the Starbucks Cafe at Seri Thai Road today and found you can just use the WiFi without to produce or even show the ID-Card or Passport.

May that will change after some time. Will test sometimes again on the same Cafe.

Cheers.

Assuming you used your True login, you've already provided ID.

Strange. As far as I know, Starbucks does not have open wi-fi - they have KSC Hotspot, which has been actively promoting the new law on the login page for months now - and then you have to log-in - and they have an agreement with True to provide access to their network. I use a number of Starbucks locations for access and always get the same login page.

Most of these "protected" wireless access points can be broken into within a matter of seconds, with no ID required obviously..

Check out Green Bangkok Wi-Fi. I picked up a free card at Central department store and have gotten decent (but not great) wi-fi speeds at various places throughout Bangkok. Fast enough to get emails, usually better. http://www.truewifi.net/th/promotion/green_bangkok.htm

I believe they provide 64 kbps, so the speed is comparable to many adsl services in Thailand :o

Gulliver's Soi 5 has a good open (used to be) wifi connection, fast enough for me to remote desktop my server in Germany.

Sitting at the back of the cafe in the Landmark near Asia Books can get you a connection, but it can be quite flakey. An old Landmark keycard from a previous trip gets you left alone.

The Amari on Soi 5 also has(d) lobby wifi, if you look respectable they assume you belong there.

Coffee world near soi 4 advertised free wifi too but I never got it to work flakey staff there.

Used to be able to pick up a free signal from the Marriott at the Starbucks opposite.

If they ever get wifi at the Beirgarten I'll move in permanently.

Correct. You can buy a card at the counter. But you first have to register (including passport number) before you can use it ...

I've seen ads for TOT Wifi at McDonalds ... very cheap ... like 600 baht for 400(!) hours.

Also here you might find some hints:

Hi TopDogger

Ho you do that in a matter of seconds? Cracking a protected wifi is not that easy as far I know. You may grab data packets to break the key but takes quite a long if there is not enough traffic.

Do you have any trick to break those codes that you could share with us?

:o

:o

you might want to look around aireplay that comes with aircrack suite.

however this is only working for WEP wich is totally outdated and complicated to remember the password/key , WPA until this day has only one vulnerability wich finds its source between the keyboard and the chair, it's vulnerable to dictionnary attacks so choose words in another language, mix them, change them and you got a total secure wifi.
