Chanthaburi Police Officer Suspended Over Forest Encroachment Allegations

A police lieutenant in Chanthaburi has been suspended from duty following allegations that he and his wife were involved in illegal deforestation and land encroachment at Khao Bo Thong, Makham district. The officer, identified as Police Lieutenant Khammee, is now under investigation for serious disciplinary misconduct. Reports surfaced that Lt. Khammee, a deputy inspector in the investigative division at Makham Police Station, had purchased a plot of land classified under a special tax scheme (Por Bor Tor 5) from two local sellers. The land, located in Khao Bo Thong, was allegedly cleared and deforested by Lt. Khammee and his wife, who were accused of cutting down various protected tree species, including wild santol, wild almond, and ironwood. The deforestation reportedly took place between 25 November 2024 and 25 January 2025. Upon discovering the illegal land clearing, local authorities launched an investigation and pressed charges against the couple under Thailand’s forest protection laws. In response, Chanthaburi Provincial Police Commander, Major General Phadungsak Raksasuk, issued Order No. 23/2025, instructing that Lt. Khammee be removed from duty pending further investigation. He has been accused of violating serious disciplinary codes, including illegally clearing and occupying forest land for personal gain without authorisation. The order cited Section 131 and Section 175 of the National Police Act B.E. 2565 (2022), as well as regulations under the 2004 Royal Thai Police Disciplinary Code, which allows for the suspension or dismissal of officers facing criminal investigations related to misconduct. Authorities deemed that keeping Lt. Khammee in active service could undermine public trust and disrupt the investigation. Lt. Khammee’s suspension took effect on 24 February and he will remain off duty while the case undergoes further legal and disciplinary review. -- 2025-02-26 -

The victim, identified as Mr Tosawat was returning home from a performance when he reportedly followed a GPS-recommended shortcut, leading to the fatal crash. Musician Dies in Crash After Following GPS Shortcut
Picture from responders. A crash claimed the life of a 33-year-old musician in the early hours of 25 February, after his car collided with an 18-wheeler trailer in Nakhon Si Thammarat province. The victim, identified as Mr Tosawat was returning home from a performance when he reportedly followed a GPS-recommended shortcut, leading to the fatal crash. The incident occurred at approximately 00:15 at Chang Sai Junction in Phra Phrom district. Police Colonel Songob Jansingh, chief of Phra Phrom Police Station, was informed of the crash and, along with medical personnel from Maharaj Nakhon Si Thammarat Hospital and rescue workers from the Pracharuamjai Foundation, rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, authorities found a white car, registered in Nakhon Si Thammarat, completely wrecked beneath the trailer of the lorry. The force of the impact left the car mangled beyond recognition. Rescuers used hydraulic cutters to retrieve the victim’s body from the driver’s seat, a challenging task given the severe damage to the vehicle. Investigations revealed that Mr Tosawat worked as an assistant academic officer at a local municipal office while also performing as a freelance drummer. On the night of the crash, he had been playing at the “Gathering of Musicians” event at a restaurant in Ron Phibun district. Unfamiliar with the route home, he belived to have relied on his GPS navigation system, which directed him onto a dark, deserted shortcut leading to Chang Sai Junction. As he approached the intersection at speed, he reportedly failed to see the approaching trailer lorry on the main road, resulting in the devastating crash. Mr Tosawat’s friends confirmed that he did not consume alcohol that night and had left the event promptly, as he was due to work the next day. They believe the crash was purely due to his lack of familiarity with the route and blind trust in following the GPS directions, which he did regularly. After an autopsy, authorities released the body to his relatives for funeral rites. Meanwhile, police continue to investigate the incident to determine whether any further legal action is required against the truck driver. -- 2025-02-26 -
