Just seen this

LG X110 netbook

LG's X110 netbook has been listed with several European retailers. Currently only the pricier model with 3G support is listed and the price, as expected, stands at €499.

Although it ends up priced well above established 10-inch models such as the Eee 1000H and MSI's Wind, it does offer several interesting features, most notably 3G/UMTS support. Apart from the mandatory N270/945GC/1GB memory combination, the LG offers a spacious 160GB hard drive and a non glare 10.2-inch screen.

With a 3-cell battery it weighs 1.19kg, although some sources claim 1.3kg. We're not sure if LG will offer a 6-cell option anytime soon, but we can see it coming sooner rather than later, as other vendors already offer 6-cell SKUs. It will be available in pink, white and black and should be available by the end of the month.

A cheaper version without 3G support should appear a bit later, priced at €399.

Hm... Micro-Star International (MSI) is planning to launch the Wind U120 with a built-in 3.5G module in November this year. What is a 3.5G module pray tell? GSM/GPRS, WiMax or something else? Is it usable in Thailand?

Re the Asus EEPC 1000H, this was part of an earlier post-

"Secondly (and this may well be a software compatibility issue), I have had rather frustrating issues with the Bluetooth functionality, namely linking/pairing it to my phone for a wireless internet connection. Has got to the stage where I am having to take it to the Asus customer care office for them to sort it all out (hopefully). Must say that I've never had to take in any other portable computer I've ever owned in that short a time after purchasing. Am giving it the benefit of the doubt for now and hoping that the problem is with the nokia software, but it will be interesting to hear what they say at Asus (no doubt they'll agree with me!)."

and I PM'ed the writer but haven't heard back yet, and I was wondering has anyone else had this problem of connecting the 1000H to a Nokia via Bluetooth, and how did you solve it.

Well, after looking at pics of the 10" MSI Wind for weeks, I finally got to see a live one locally.

This is a very small unit, if, like me, you are used to 22" screens and a 15.4" laptop, the size comes as a bit of a shock!

Ok, I'd never seen a 10" before today.

If you haven't seen a live one, go see one before ordering, it's no bigger than an average paperback book.

Seriously, it looks like a $700 toy & I should get delivery next week & give a short report.

That's the whole point of the Netbooks. They're all around that size.

I'd like to buy a mini for my son for Christmas but am not sure what to get. I'm in the UK at present and have seen the Acer One and MS Wind clones at very cheap prices, but was quite taken with the 10 inch Packard Bell Easynote. This has a Pentium dual core running Vista and seemed to have the fastest processor of the cheap machines in this category. It only has an 80GB HD though. Anybody know anything about it?

Netbooks generally use a low-power Atom processor in order to increase autonomy. By using a Pentium DC CPU you get more power but at a cost of autonomy, i.e. your battery runs dry faster - and Vista is surely not going to make it better.

I don't personally like Packard Bell. The ones I've seen were plastic'y and were falling apart even in the showroom. YMMV.

Bought an eeePC 701 about 6 months ago, but unhappy with very small drive capacity (4 GB), and battery life (about 2 hrs). Gave it to a friend.

So, what is your recommendation for a netbook that has...

Those are my three top priorities.

Just bought my EEEpc at Tesco, it's on offer for 12K or something alike.

900 series with 30 GB HD, comes with linux, but installed XP on it.

Works like a charm and picks up wireless rather good.

Seems like most people advise to upgrade to 2GB internal though.

Just bought the same (Mall Ram, 11000 B with XP).

Turned out completely useless:

Very slow (never mind, just drink some coffee between the key strokes).

Waaaay too heavy to carry it around all day. I just moved it 4 times, now it's gathering dust on a shelf. Not suitable for a mobile worker. This makes it useless for me.

Picks up WiFi very well - what I didn't know is, WiFi is useless. Out of 3 places that I was interested in 2 don't have WiFi at all, 1 has 54 ThaiMb/sec which is the speed of a dial up modem. OK to read an email in an emergency (go to toilet between keystrokes, coffee is not enough) but not suitable to surf the net. This makes the ASUS useless again.

I will probably just throw it away, maybe give it to the kids.

BTW Keyboard is fine. Battery is 5800 mAh, quite ok, lasts about 2-3 hours (if you don't actually use the notebook).

Furthermore, it turned out that EeePC using Windows cannot use WiFi.

(By now I have tried to use it at a location that has good WiFi.)

Using WiFi uses up 80-90% CPUusage, so it makes the EeePC unusable.

Unfortunately, I am not the only one with this problem:

EeePC is definitely the most overhyped piece of junk I have ever bought.

The chuzpe to sell a "netbook" which cannot use WiFi ... and the users' stupidity to use a netbook at home instead a real PC... but of course, as another user mentioned and all my computer-savvy friends keep telling me, it's all my fault.

well I can only repeat that my wifi on my 701 works just fine. No problems with CPU utilization at all. I've recently returned from Thailand, Cambodia, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore and the wifi worked everywhere - hotels, airports, train stations, even parked on the street outside a carwash in Yasothon! But then I'm using the Xandros OS that came with it, not Windows. I left windows many years ago because of those sorts of problems, haven't looked back.

Why don't you try installing either Xandros or Eeebuntu on it? I'm sure you'll have a lot less trouble.

And anyway, even if you insist on sticking with windoze, there must be plenty of user help available for you if you just look for it?

I have the most basic EEE made, the 2g surf, and I have installed TinyXP and it works flawlessly. WiFi and all......even bluetooth with a dongle installed no problem.
