Retired, gofer for family, hobby farmer, but real money making side line, is selling vodoo dolls outside the those places of ill-repute to the working girls who feel they have been slighted. Full moon, sales seem to increase.

I live in Thailand on an early retirement pension.

Must admit, since I have lived here, I do see my living standards dwindling month by month and finding it difficult to drag out my pension with the continuing galloping inflation, low interest rates and poor exchange rates.

Those who are considering retiring in Thailand should be financially well prepared for the future and not just have incomes or savings based on present costs and bank rates.

Wise words, cannot be repeated enough and enough

Employed, with weekly/monthly income ? = I work as a English teacher.

Self-Employed, run own business ? = I have a bar.

Mass stereotyping at its finest! :o

Just curious, but how do you expect those people in prison to vote?

Does the 'Bangkok Hilton' have free wifi now? :D

As a previous poster state not all TV members are actually in Thailand, and let me assure you, in the country where I come from they have wifi, internet and private hifis, sourround systems, flat screen TVs, 60 channels + 2 hardcore porno channels in their nice little condos with separate private bathroom, a ring on the bell will produce service personnel in less than 3 Min, daily trips in the park, sports facilities (body building centers complete with merchants of all the doping drugs money can buy) , education facilities, wife visits in private room at least twice a week where you can party with whatever drugs that a "kinder egg" popped out of a bodycavity can hold, Social workers that come daily to assure them that all is their parents and society's fault so they dont have to be pressurised by feeling bad about what they have done aso. aso. aso, :D

Ohh by the way I am a retired State Civil Servant from the Justice Department, living here in LOS on my State Civil Servant pension, AND I AM NEVER GOING BACK. :D:D:o

I need some more wise words. I'd like to know what line you follow if you are at retirement age and have estimated pension/savings capable of guaranteeing support for oneself in LOS for say 10-15 years or so. Do you come to LOS and hope to die (baht-less but happy) before age 75-80, or stay in Europe to rot away slowly, hoping government benefits will support you when the savings run out?

well i work...

My salary is less then the uk, but after taxes here against Taxes and NI in the UK + cost of living, i earn double :o

When your contract is up next, insert a clause where they pay all taxes... :D

Here are 2 wise words: COMMON SENSE.

At the end of the day, it`s all down to finance.

My situation is: I sold up my property in London, put half the capital into UK banks and the other half into Thai banks, gaining interest, so that ensures that my savings keep up with inflation providing I dont withdraw the balances.

Last year at age 55, I began claiming my company pension which is index linked. In another few years a substantiual amount of this pension will be swallowed up by inflation. That`s when, if I`m still alive, my UK state pension kicks in, in another eight and a half years.

I realise that I am extremely lucky how things worked out. But for me, if I only had enough financial funds to last for the next 10 years in Thailand, no way would I have settled here. But of course it is up to every individual to use comon sense and do what they consider is best for them.

This is a point I would like to debate on the forum sassienie. Savings of whatever amount would be likely to last a good deal less time in Europe than they would in Thailand (not living it up in Bangkok). Spend the money "at home" over 5 years, or over 10 or more years in Thailand? The inevitable dependency on the state would be the outcome either way but on a different timescale. So the question would be whether to enjoy 10 or more years in the sun in Thailand or sit "at home" in the rain, coming to terms with the fact that your lifelong dream was just that, a dream?

So what is the "common sense" decision to take? I know the decision that is "best for me", I'm just interested in various members' own ideas and points that they may raise on the topic.

Under this scenario, the person probably spent most of his life basically slaving away at a crummy job, hoping for a 'future'.

To then desperately try and make those savings stretch into old-age by continuing the crummy existence is IMHO the height of stupidity.

At least do something you want to do for a while. Let's face it, at retirement age there is no future. It's downhill all the way. The length of your life no longer matters, only the quality of what's left. If I had to trade the length for quality, there's no contest.

Don't understand those that want to hang on under any circumstance at all costs. Nobody's gonna come and save you with a magic elixir. Just something you have to come to terms with. At least take control for a while, while you can. The length of life is unimportant, only the quality is.

No contest.

Have to agree with GH, the poll needs an option that “living expenses” covered by employment benefits above monthly salary.

Most expats I know are in that position, that is why we work overseas.

This just a suggestion:

Another option for those who are financially handicapped to fulfil their ambition to reside in Thailand for the rest of their naturals could do a compromise.

Spend time in Thailand and the home country during each year.

If there are any financial wizards out there, lets hear your suggestions?

I wonder which countries they are in??

1. Not all TV members are at present in Thailand.

2. Not all TV members outside Thailand are at present in prison, I hope!!

3. Where I come from it is exactly that bad, I did not even mention the pre release ski vacations or the tax payer funded fully furnished apartments waiting for the poor misunderstood individuals once they get out.

4. Maybe all six are from home. :D:D :D

Well, I interpreted "cover their living costs" as meaning while living in LOS, other wise it would be "What do you do for a living", so in prison means in prison in LOS...

The Bangkwang webcam scheme seems never to have been implemented :o

umm, I think I got too much junk in the trunk, but dam_n if I don't have a pleasing personality and charm. Debonnair even. I can really cut a few impressive dance steps in a mosh pit. How much do you think I'd fetch? I need to replenish the lovely $43,000. I lost last year on my retirement investment (thanks Wall Street.)

I sell hard class A drugs.

Made in Germany right??

Grown from my windowsill and processed in my bathroom.

Do you need a work-permit, to do that ? :o

No problem ! Just look at star performer britmaveric. He makes enough dosh in a couple of weeks to finance his lavish lifestyle for months back in the US !

Besides, your personality and charm will ensure punters buy you lots of drinks (and get drunk themselves). Once they are drunk enough, the junk in the trunk won't matter any more (and if it does, who cares ? You've probably made enough off them in "lady" drinks and tips any ways !) :D
