Looking To Join Other Families In Getting A Good Teacher

We (me, Thai wife, and 7 yo daughter) will be moving to Sri Racha soon. We have been homeschooling our daughter thus far and she is quite advanced in her learning. We now want to make the switch to a more school-ish environment (friends, play time, and continued accelerated learning).

Knowing that the typical Thai teacher salary is less than (sometimes considerably less than) THB ~20k/month for a good quality teacher; and knowing that the international schools charge THB ~45k/month, it only makes sense to consider grouping with 4-8 other parents and we each ante up THB ~10k per month for an excellent private teacher to teach our 4-10 children 5 hours per day, 4 days per week, all year long.

1. Anyone have recommendations for (preferably FEMALE fluent English-speaking Thai) teachers in the Chonburi area?

2. What accreditation and credentials should I be looking for?

3. Can our children take the standard exams and would their education be recognized when they transfer to a real school later in life?

4. Anyone else in the Chonburi area with children in the expensive international schools care to join in and make this happen?

I've read on the board that there is a very high turnover at the area international schools. If they are not happy, I sure don't want them teaching my daughter. I would much rather get an excellent private teacher who only has 4-8 students and save a few THB at the same time.

Your input is appreciated.

My child is way too young to consider your proposal but I will make a couple of comments if I may.

What about specialisation ? Do you think, more so going forward a couple of years, that a generalist is going to be sufficient ? Where will you set up your chemistry and physics laboratories ?

I agree that at 7 years old it is probable a capable teacher could cope with most subjects but would a Thai know sufficient English grammar ? or syntax ? What about a third language ?

How about a transition at 11 to a school ? I'm not sure a rounded education can be completed until immediately pre university whilst at home. I note you anticipate this transition but I know at age 11 we schooled pupils would have questioned a home schooled child why they were "different".

I am coming to terms with what to do with my daughter in post kindergarten schooling and there appears to be little in the way of quality at any price and a lot of rubbish at an extortionate cost.

Finally, you should deal with insurance for the teacher, hiring an emergency replacement, liability on both sides, medical etc.

I wish you luck.

To both posters: I hope this thread will blossom...

I have a daughther only one and a half years old going to nursery (because her mother goes to school daytime and I have business to attend to (kind of 'farang no cash = farang child no future')).

But it feel sorry for my child - a Thai nursery is most about 'waiing' and sleeping on the floor from 9AM to 3PM.

Only time will tell if I can find her a good place to study and learn. I wish the OP good luck.

There have been a couple of other postings in the past year with parents looking to pool homeschooling resources in the Pattaya area. You might try a search and PM the members if you find them.

HI

Just a quick note. We recently moved to Pattaya and are homeschooling our child, we are looking to meet other homeschoolers or like minded in the area. Also interested to see how you go with your group schooling.
