Dazed And Confussed

Recommended Posts

The more I read the more I'm confussed hopefully you can set me streight. I'm a 62 year old single male living in California but I'm planning on moving to Thailand this coming year. My problem is after moving to Thailand I'd like to go back to California and visit family twice a year and I'm not sure what

kind of Visa would be best for me a Retirement Visa (OA) or a Mulitple Entry Visa

can I use a Retirement Visa to leave and return to Thailand within a one year period or is a Mulitple Entry Visa best.

I have another question on transfering money to Thailand, will the Thai Government tax my retirement if I open a bank account in Thailand. I can open a bank account in Los Angeles thats a Thai Bank branch is that a better option and have my retirement check direct deposited.

I thank you in advance for any help you can give me

You just need to get a Non-Immigrant O class visa based on retirement. You need that bank account IN Thailand. Once the bank account is in place, you can apply at Immigration for a one year extension, and you continue to do that each year you stay. You must get a re-entry permit when you are going abroad. Good luck.

Get two entries if you plan to go twice in a year, or a multiple entry if you plan to go more often. Get it at Immigration when you do the extension. :o

As Pat says it should not be a problem to travel with a retirement visa. For the extension of stay each year you would also have to obtain a re-entry permit at a cost of 3,800 baht (multi) or 1,000 baht (single) to allow travel. Most who plan to travel more than once will get the multi type at the same time they extend their stay each year and not have to worry about it later.

It will be better to keep your US bank (you may want to use for travel and international payments [such as IRS]) and credit/debit card. Just set up a wire transfer agreement before you leave to allow you to transfer by phone or fax. Then after you set up account here in Thailand you can start to transfer savings when you need. It is best to always send money to Thailand that is savings earned in another tax year to avoid any question of tax here.

At Bangkok you can get in Terminal 1 after you receive your boarding pass but before you enter immigration area. Not sure about Chiang Mai so would make sure first. I always obtain at a regular immigration office so as not to have to have that extra worry on flight day.
