Chart Thai Disbandment Case Sent to Constitution Court

UPDATE : 1 October 2008

The Attorney-general's Office has delivered its investigation report on the disbandment charge against the ruling coalition Chart Thai Party to the Constitution Court.

Director-general for the Special Litigation Department of the Attorney-general's Office, Seksan Bangsombun, and his deputy Surasak Treerattrakul delivered four boxes holding the investigation report and evidence on the disbandment charge against the Chart Thai Party to the Constitution Court this morning.

A box of additional documents related to the disbandment charge against the Matchima Thipataya Party was also forwarded to the court today.

Both parties, as well as the People Power Party, face possible dissolution under the 2007 Constitution after members of their board of directors were found guilty of electoral fraud.

Seksan said his department's investigation reports of the disbandment charges against the Chart Thai and Matchima Thipataya parties are based on the findings of the Election Commission and there was no further investigation of eye-witnesses.

He also revealed the disbandment charge against the main ruling People Power Party is under the consideration of the working panel chaired by Deputy Attorney-General Julasingh Wasantasingh.

The panel will hold its second meeting tomorrow to conduct a study of the documents and evidence.

The Attorney-general's Office has come under widespread criticism for its delay in forwarding these political parties' disbandment cases to the Constitution Court. It has even been accused of delaying the cases for the benefit of the political parties in the ruling coalition.
