Toxin got a light sentence. China might have given him death sentence. Does he get to keep the land? Two years for stealing 700 million baht from Thailand. That's 40,000 a minute and almost one million baht a day. I would volunteer to serve it for him for 700 million baht.

I think that you and I both would have to join a very very long queue.

I suspect there will be more court issues over them keeping the land.

Nothing has been said for the LOGIC of letting them keep the land.

Maybe SHE bought the land, but he broke the law,

so SHE gets to keep it.. Bizarre for sure.

The land was cheap but wasn't too cheap.

Opening bid was 2 billion but the second highest bid was 8xx million. Pojama requested a discount of about 100 million because her hubby was the PM.

Who know she probably paid in cash. Not like the rest of us that need mortgages and bank support. I'm still making payments on my plasma.

There is no way she can offload it now at a profit. Good on her.

Keeping the land would seem to suggest there is wrong doing without damage. But it would appear that the legal point is he shouldn't have allowed his mrs to enter, plain and simple. Ironically, they appear to have found that much in the way of Al Capone, the easiest way to catch this type of wrongdoing is to chase the money. If they dig equally on all sides, the next parliament could be consisting of about 30 MP's.

What confuses me all the time, is why when you have 2bn USD somewhere in the bank, why get your nickers in a twist about 12mn USD of tax and 20mn on a land deal?

Well anyway, the legal wheels of Thailand turn seamlessly for a while at least. Lets hope this doesn't spiral out of control overnight.

.....No one now will be able to run Thailand with a strong fist...which the Thais need...a strong leader....corrupt or not....so long the majority of Thailand propers isn't that more important???

:o Gutsy and serious stuff Sir!

So as long as... money flows it doesn't matter, in fact nothing at all matters?

Are you serious?

Always when I read "strong fist, xxx need a strong leader, etc etc etc" I have to shout "Heil Hitler"

Thaksin guilty in land case, gets 2-year imprisonment

Thaksin Shinawatra sentenced to two years in jail

BANGKOK: -- The Supreme Court Tuesday found former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra guilty in the Ratchada land case.

He was sentenced to 2 years in jail.

Pojaman Shinawatra, his wife, was found not guilty and the court revoked arrest warrant against her.

The court found that Thaksin had violated Article 100 and Article 102 of the National Counter Corruption Act, which states that government officials, including prime ministers, and their spouses are prohibited from entering into or having interests in contracts with state agencies under their supervision.

-- The Nation 2008-10-21

While it is human nature to nit pick on what and what will not happen, we need to remember and recognise the significance of this important verdict and it,s implications in the positive for Thailands citizens, not forgetting the unworthy, corrupt, self only PUYAI who could now be reflecting on their various misdeeds and abuse of power.

This thread is of real importance and the debate is very healthy with all opinions of reason being commented on in a fair manner.

Non of the recognised opposition to what has happened must be in a stae of shock, going on their lack of comment.

He nearly escaped again. It was 5:4.

The bizarre thing is that only 5 of the 9 thought he knew his wife was spending such a vast sum of money....

The greedy always want more.

And that usually is what brings them down in the end. Moderation and he would have been safe from the cases that caused his downfall...

Have you not heard of the the phase "Never Enough".

Now the government will have to come up with 700+ million to return to her and take the land back.

Since is law is broken, the deal is void. Now I guess LH and others can have a fair go at the re-auction.

The only surprise is that PAD must be very worried. If you get convicted with a 5 to 4 margin, it means that the highest people in this country were not be able to intimidate 4 very import judges. Given the fact that the plot of land is not seized that he was not convicted for misuse of power, there is hope that he will be able to keep a substantial part of his money. And with money dear people he would be able to retake what is rightfully his. Power.

Personally I believe that the margin is just - sadly - another forum of posturing to make it appear as a considered verdict.

If it was a landslide it'll only add more weight to his farcical* asylum claim.

Don't get me wrong - I'm happy to see him go down, but only the severely misguided would believe that this is the last we'll here from him.

* Redundant word - feel free to skip.

Thaksin to write a letter to respond the ruling

Convicted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra said he would write a letter to respond to the Supreme Court's ruiling which sentenced him to two years in jail for abusing of power for his wife to purchase a land from the state.

Thaksin declined to comment on the ruling, saying he will write a letter in his handwriting about the matters, Matichon online reported.

I wonder if what we has been discussed about Thaksin this and he being a criminal etc.etc. is only some sort of a cliche... of people who are living in an illusionary dumb sheep kind of follow the leader with the biggest mouth..isn't there anyone here on the forum who has the GUTS to be pro-Thaksin??? I don't understand much about politics...what I do understand is that Thailand after he is ousted has been exposed of not able to handle democracy....The PAD has destroyed more than Thaksin with his " corruption" or criminal activities....foreign investments under Thaksin was more stable...now forget it....I wouldn't want to invest anything into Thailand...No one now will be able to run Thailand with a strong fist...which the Thais need...a strong leader....corrupt or not....so long the majority of Thailand propers isn't that more important??? The poor was benefitting so much, more stability, educational reform, fight against corruption, crime, drugs....all a major push towards a better Thailand...Now it is all going down the hole...just because a small minority rich big mouths are envious of Thaksins successes.....think of this for a minute...hope more people on this forum has the GUTS to also respond.....

and a note to all those pro-PAD ravers. The verdict was 5-4 in a pro-military coup Supreme Court. What does that tell you! Guilty, but still leaves a lot of questions as to why it is not clearly 9-0. Why is such a verdict so questionable. Is the law up to interpretation! Did Chuen Lekpai not clain the FIDF was not under the PM's control. Surely this must make one think! This now sets a scarey presedence for all government officials doing any form of business.

Thaksin says he expected guilty verdict

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra told a Reuters reporter that he had expected a guilty verdict in the land purchase case.

The reporter, Nopporn Wong-anant, made a long distance phone call to interview the former prime minister after the conviction ruling.

"No worry. It's political and you know how Thai politics is like," Nopporn quoted Thaksin as saying.

I am sure the irony of the govt returning 700 mn baht to her, while their assets are frozen and they are convicted criminals isn't lost on you or most people. I can just imagine the s**t that would stir on the PAD stage.

Maybe she could call it quid pro quo and use it to pay her tax bill.

Either way, not a very likely outcome. They have ruled that there is no reason to take the land back. It is buried somewhere in the links to the Nation.

Thai ex-PM guilty of corruption

Thaksin Shinawatra has been living in the UK

Exiled Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has been found guilty of corruption and sentenced to two years in prison by the Thai Supreme Court.

In a landmark ruling, he was found to have violated conflict of interest rules in helping his wife buy land from a state agency at a knock-down price.

The couple fled to the UK in August, saying they would not get a fair trial.

The decision comes amid growing tension between the former leader's supporters and his opponents.

The ruling is the first in a string of stalled and slow-moving cases against Thaksin, former owner and now honorary chairman of Manchester City Football Club, launched in the wake of the 2006 military coup.

The coup leaders claimed there had been massive corruption and abuse of power under Thaksin's rule, and set up a special unit to investigate the business dealings of the former leader and his close associates.

His wife has already been convicted of tax evasion and sentenced to three years in jail but was acquitted by the Supreme Court in the current case.

Political tensions

The nine-member court ruled by five to four that Thaksin had violated the constitution in involving himself in the land deal.

"Thaksin had violated the article of the constitution on conflict of interest, as he was then prime minister and head of government who was supposed to work for the benefit of the public," one judge said as he read the verdict.

Thaksin said he had expected the Supreme Court to sentence him to jail but that he was not seeking asylum in the UK, Reuters news agency reported.

Protesters want to force the government to resign

The chief prosecutor in the case said he wanted Britain to "quickly extradite" Thaksin.

The verdict takes Thaksin another step away from returning to Thai politics, says the BBC's Lucy Williamson in Bangkok.

It is welcome news for the protesters who have been camped outside Government House for weeks, demanding the resignation of the government, saying it is too close to Thaksin, our correspondent adds.

The administration of Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat - who is Thaksin's brother-in-law - has been virtually paralysed by the protests.

WE ARE a naive bunch(Most of "Us")!

These laws ARE the Junta's "New"amendments to the constitution! RE: Thaksin was within the Code of law At said time the "Land" deal was

made.

His wife did NOT get the land cheap! She tenured this highest bid!776Million bht for 33 rai.The commitee representatives voted that her bid won!The land was being sold by the Thai Developement authority. 776 million + buildings on that barren land would have been a sweet deal for the local inhabitants of this BKK center.

Meanwhile the PAD has created a vaccume of security here in LOS.And the criminals are rapidly understanding that "Anarchy" can be lucrative!

Ex: previous 14 days in Petburi,1 attempted rape and successful robbery on an elderly female teacher, One House robbery on a Large Beauty shop: the power was cut to inhibit the CTV survail and it was cleaned out,05:30 this morning and woman was jogging, knocked down kicked and robbed by a gang of 5 young men (They freely "Tag" their gang name about town lately "SK")

I can suggest several alternatives to the Crappy Biased Media coverage and the PAD brainwash!( PM me!) Thaksin did about 1000% less ugly doodoo than Bush or Blair! And despite all of the moanings,Actually lifted the average Thai living standard 100%.As well as creation of a somewhat well fubnctioning and secure legal system.

It's a power struggle.Between Democratic principles and a small wealthy elite! At least 50 Million Thai's need to be "Brainwashed" by PAD.

I don't think so!

By the way can anyone tell us WHO has "The Arabian Blue Diamond"?

Peace!

*sigh*

No, the deal wasn't legal when it was made. That is what the case was about. Not a retroactive application of some new law. You are sadly mistaken.

No, neither Bush nor Blair organized a campaign where internal blacklists of individuals [of their own citizens!] was targeted for termination.

Vacuum of security? Really? The same amount of shit happens as it always has, get real.
