The curtains in my rented house are in dire need of a good cleaning.

What is the best way? Hire a professional (exists?) to take down and clean or I just take down myself and throw them into a bucket of soap and water and start scrubbing?

They are made of a very sturdy material whatever it is. I don't want them to shrink and then when I put them back up they only cover half the window!! haha

Any help appreciated....

Use a bucket full of soapy water and a scrubbing brush but be careful and don't fall out the window when washing them.

Most likely your curtain is made of “commercial” fabric - which will likely shrink if not careful.

Just take them to the dryclean place, that’s what I would do

You need to pull yourself together.

:o Not that was funny!

I too have some full length curtains, heavy fabric, and am scared $41tless of getting them cleaned. I guess I just don't trust a laundry not to mess them up.

They have a few marks where certain small flies have been squashed and left behind a dark mark. I hope those can be removed.

I'll be watching this thread in case someone comes up with some personal experiences of getting them cleaned.

"Pull yourself together" :D :D ... still laughing,

They sound like they have black-out material on the back, if they are very sturdy. Whatever you do, DON'T put them in a washing machine , (or a bucket of soapy water). I did with mine and they shrunk by about 6 inches. Fortunately they were old, and I was going to replace them anyway. In all probability they need to be dry cleaned. Good luck.

Most reputable curtain shops can remove the curtains get them cleaned properly and ironed and re-hung. Then if there's a problem it's on their back to fix it. I would say if the curtains are old old whatever the shop will decline the cleaning job as they don't want the risk. If you wash them yourself you can't iron them correctly. Also if the curtains have the weights in the bottom and they are sewn in place and you wash them the material may stain from the metal weights. A shop will remove the weights and replace them after washing

Try the shop that you bought them from as a first choice if that's possible.

My "weights" appear to be a thick metal chain - about 1 cm diameter loops. I suppose I could un-stitch part of the hem and pull it completely out before cleaning.

Are there any special instructions that apply to the Thai-style pleated curtains with drawstrings? I have some that could do with cleaning soon.

I really don't know, but I'm tempted to fix a curtain pole up outside the house, hang the curtains from it as they normally hang, spray them with soapy water and then clean water, then let them dry. The weight of the water might be a problem though.

I took mine (seven years old) to a good dry cleaners two weeks ago, and they made a fantastic job of cleaning them. They came back with all the pleats still intact, and looked absolutely like new when I hung them back up. Total cost for six windows, and one large set of patio door curtains - 3,000 baht.

Well, I'm not sure where you are, but my house is in Pattaya. I took them to a place which I think is called Express Dry Clean (something like that), in South Road, just down towards the third road lights from the Mosque.

Cheers,

I found my curtains remained in pristine condition after I refrained from wiping my dick on them after sex...hope that helps!
