i've booked a return flight to thailand arriving in december and leaving in march. i plan to leave thailand within the 30 days of the tourist exemption to visit cambodia and vietnam and return to thailand with 30 or less days of my trip remaining. however i've read on here and a few other places about airlines not letting people board unless they have proof of exit within the 30 days. does anyone have any experience of this happening?

obviously i don't want to risk my trip by chancing it at the check in desk in glasgow airport so i was wondering if anyone knows if they will accept bus or train confirmations and the best way to book transport from thailand to cambodia online? i phoned emirates but the guy was hopeless.

any help will be very much appreciated, i can't wait to get over and this is the only wee cloud hanging over my trip. cheers

The problem is the airlines trying to conform with the letter of the Thai law or risk paying a fine and having to transport you back for free. Some carriers are more stringent than others. Some GATE AGENTS are more stringent than others. "Onward travel" for Thai visa exemption means onward AIR travel. Bus or train tickets do not count.

The solution? Get a 60-day tourist visa. That will get the airline off your back. When you leave Thailand, the visa will be "used." And you can return to Thailand on a 30-day exemption. If it's at all an issue at immigration at that point, you have your proof of onward travel: your return air ticket.

i take it if i have a visa it won't matter that flight home is over sixty days away, the airline would just except that i have persmission to enter thailand and that would be fine, ya?

thanks a lot for the advice. i can't wait to come over, the more i read about the thailand the better it seems.

There is a Thai consulate in Glasgow, but do they issue visas? If not, look at the Thai consulate in Hull's website. They are extremely helpful.

4, Woodside Place,

Charing Cross,

Glasgow. G3 7QF.

Tel: 0141 3535090

Fax: 0141 3322928

that's extremely handy, i'll have a wander round and see what they say.

you have to have a visa for check-in in Glasgow. You plan to leave within 30 days then do not use your visa in BKK. Do not put the visa nr on the arrival card and say when asked that you will need it later..I did it and will do it in 2 weeks.

i'm probably missing something but why would it benefit it me not to use the visa when i arrive?

You are coming to Thailand and leave wthin 30 days and then return to Thailand again and leave within 30 days. That means you are missing nothing and you don't need to save your visa.
