I tried faxing for the 1st time to the US but it kept failing. I may not be using the correct codes.

Can someone tell me what codes precedes the fax number. Let's assume the number is 212 999-8888.

Thanks

I only fax directly from Windows, and the number I enter is in the format: 001-1-212-999-8888

If you try one of the cheaper phone call prefixes like 008- or 007- I think the line quality is too low for a fax signal to survive the connection. Or, at least *I* could never establish a solid fax connection on 008- or 007- and then later read that only 001- would work.

I'm assuming you are on a direct phone line and not having to go through a PBX or other phone system where you might need to put 9, or 0, before you get an outside dial tone.

009-1-area code-phone number

You can use 001-1 but it is more expensive and 009 has always worked for me.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I am faxing from a Thai friend's faxing machine who has never faxed to the US.

Maybe your friend doesn't have IDD (international direct dialing) enabled?

I agree with this comment about if the number is allowing out of country calling. When I rented a house with a number provided it was not set up for International calls and I needed to use a calling card. Check it out by just trying to dial the fax number with the telephone handset and you may find out that it faults on all international calls.
