Hk Iphone

Hi,

Has anybody here gotten an iPhone3G in Hong Kong and used it here without hacked SIM cards, unlocking, unblocking, unfreezing, unbricking or unanything? And with the new 2.2 software available was able to download and install this update without issue?

Not talking about anything short of a phone actually bought over the counter of a respectable store in Hong Kong. No further intervention, no visits to MBK.

regards,

Rob

2.2 should install fine on it as it is factory unlocked. 2.2 should work fine on any iPhone that hasn't been modified.

I bought one from the HK Apple Store about six weeks ago. It's completely unlocked legally. I simply put in my AIS SIM card, activated it through iTunes and it works without a problem, roaming in other countries included. The HK Apple Store does not require a contract or in-store activation...you simply buy the iPhone and walk out. AFAIK, Hong Kong is the only place in the world where you can but a completely unlocked iPhone, contract-free. Price there is about 23K baht. The warranty is valid with Apple, but only in Hong Kong.

I have since jailbroken my iPhone so that I can install non-iTunes store applications, and it still works fine. One word of warning though: do NOT upgrade to 2.2 if you want to continue using your jailbreak applications. The new 2.2 firmware will not allow them to run, but your phone will still be unlocked. I would expect the jailbreak hackers to have that sorted very soon. Do a google for pwnage if you are interested. If you are not interested in jailbreak applications, the 2.2 update will install by clicking "Update" in iTunes and of course your phone will still be unlocked since it is a legally, unhacked iPhone.

Thanks, couldnt have asked for a more comprehensive and solid response.

I have been hearing about the iPhone coming to Thailand. Media reports state that True has a non-exclusive deal with Apple in place, others might join. That would mean local warranty and what not. But no word on when this would be happening. So I might just have to get me one of the HK phones and be done with the waiting.
