More teenaged girls getting HIV infection

The Health Ministry has expressed concern over the increasing incidence of HIV infections among young girls between 15 -19 years old who could access porn magazines and media which publish articles and pictures on real sexual experiences, erotic short stories and novels.

The Health Ministry has expressed concern over the increasing incidence of HIV infections among young girls between 15 -19 years old who could access porn magazines and media which publish articles and pictures on real sexual experiences, erotic short stories and novels.

Deputy of Public Health Minister, Vicharn Meenchaiyanant said the recent ministry's survey had found that about 48 per cent of young girls have watched pornographic videos while 35 per cent have visited porn sites on the Internet.

The Public Health found that only 39 per cent of young girls use condom regularly. The number of HIV infections in young women is two-fold higher than that of young men.

Since the first case of HIV/AIDS was reported in Thailand in 1984, the incidence of HIV infections has increased steadily. So far 1,115,415 adults have been infected. Of this number 585,830 have died of AIDS while 532,522 adults are suffering from HIV or AIDS. New infections affected 12,787 adults and children this year.

The World Health Organisation last year found that over 30.8 million people around the world have been infected with HIV while 2.1 million have died during the past year. About 2.5 million new cases of HIV have been reported.

The health agency estimated that about 6,800 people per day or five people per minute would be infected with HIV. Of this total, 40 per cent are teenagers aged 15-24 years old.

Africa is the most infected area with 25 million people living with HIV while South Asia and South East Asia are the second most affected area with 8 million HIV patients.

In a bid to combat HIV, the health ministry has collaborated with relevant agencies to launch a massive campaign against HIV among teenagers.

The campaign, aimed at raising awareness among teenagers about safe sex and the use of condoms, will include mini concerts, parades and exhibitions to draw attention of the public to the dangers of HIV.

The campaign will start on December 1 to commemorate World AIDS Day.

The theme highlights both the political leadership needed to fulfil commitments that have been made in response to HIV/AIDS - particularly the promise of universal access to prevention, treatment, care and support - and to celebrate the leadership that has been witnessed at all levels of society.

Well finally some return to information dissemination locally.

Bravo for the clearer thinkning minds!

Yes, inform the ones least likely to have good information.

Since so few parents dare explain sex functions to their daughters,

they are the most likely to find out through a girl friend showing

them a porn vid on a telephone or internet. See that!; giggle giggle.

Certainly the gov. attempts to block porn have been close to useless,

if 48% of young girls have seen some. This is the group, in theory, LEAST

likely to want to see it... But if you don't know it's done, but you know your

girlfriends are doing it, you want find out, so to not look un-sophisticated with

your boyfriend. And do it through some source, as such porn passed from

phone to phone and on the net. Young boys were talking young girls

out of their underwear for centuries before porn ever was common, or known by the young

so this hasn't really caused a new wave of young girls seeking immoral sex.

Just the usual amount, but better informed on functions. Would be the best guess.

I would guess the slightly older infected boys are doing more than one girl,

as young rutting males are wont to do, and mistakenly thinking because they

are young, they won't get the bug... Sadly wrongheaded. And more girls getting

infected. And of course they don't seem to think of unwanted pregnacy in this either.

It's amazing in someways because condoms are available on most every street corner store.

If you have the nerve to buy it.... There's a rub, embarrassment.

Condom machines in LADIES ROOMS would lower this problem.

Discretely bought and then used.

Just some thoughts.

Jai Dee thanks for posting this.

clever reporting, always blame the young kids, the fact is that it is most likely the parents that are sharing and watching these videos with the kids...

if they just introduced sex education at school, but then again that will never happen in this so called prudent society :o

What shoddy health safety approaches! Reading the article, you would think that pornography is the cause of HIV- which no doubt is the intention of this backward announcement. Why aren't they testing knowledge of safer sexual practices, sexual health, family planning? No, no- much easier to blame it on the porn (and more young people have probably had the 'benefits' of porn than of real sexual health education). And then there's this attempt again to lump 15 year olds with 19 year olds...

I can't believe they try to say 48% percent of the 40% of young girls that get are have watched porn.... So what about the 52% that did NOT?

This place will forever amaze me.... Porn is illegal, but buying hookers is OK? Of that 40% that got infected what percent were sex workers? What percent had a boyfriend that visits sex workers? That is most likely the link to the HIV rates, not a porn movie, last time I checked aids does not sit on your hand and infect you once you touch yourself.... Isn;t that what porn leads to.... self sex?

I guess thats why they continue to have aids outbreaks, poor education.... They don't address the real issue they address the PORN issue???

Like in the states when a kid shoots up a school, the parents try to blame it on movies or rap music.... when in reality it was poor parents and a lack of talking with their distressed kids.... Same issue here.... How about dad talking to his 15-19 year old girl... Something like "I don't want you to have sex, but I know at some point you will, and if you do please were a condom, you don't want to get pregnant or get aids, here is how you put a condom on (showing on a banana), here is a BIG bag full of condoms under the bathroom sink, again I am not condoning you having sex (I will kill you if I find out), but for the love of buddah please use the condoms"

As I am a teacher in Thailand I look at my students daily and think about this. Who will be the first in my class to get it?

All the statistics show that atleast one student is school gets HIV or AIDS but then again you have lie, dam_n lie, and statistics. I am not saying that it is wrong, it is just not showing where these people are. I guess that alot of the girl in poor areas are hit by this, the richer more developed areas are not hit as hard. I think that rural Thailand suffers more than the big cities (might be wrong about BKK here).

I think that one should not blame the ignorant kids, you have to blame the government, the parents, and the schools.

Every school should teach the kids about sex and STD's. That is the way that I learned and I did pay attention to it. Unfortunatly there is no way that Thai teachers are capable of teaching the studens about sex as it will be to difficult to explain certain things for them. Properly trained people should teach them, someone that can talk to the kids about these subjects without being shy and evasive. They have a lot of questions and they deserve answers.

Parents have to bite the apple and talk to their kids about this, but I have seen way to many fathers/mothers here in Thailand, they don't talk to their kids, they talk at them... Don't ask mum or teacher a question that might cause her to lose face! (And that is where the problem is)...

Why aren't they testing knowledge of safer sexual practices, sexual health, family planning?

They are. Thailand has had the most successful anti HIV and family planning program in the world. Yearly HIV infections were at over 150,000 people per year in the early 90s, now it is down to a bit over 12,000 per year. You may have noticed this line in the article

The campaign, aimed at raising awareness among teenagers about safe sex and the use of condoms

Just because they mention internet porn does not mean they aren't STRONGLY encouraging condom use. The reason the infection rate is so much lower today is because of their previous 100% condom usage campaign. The problem is that some people thing HIV is a thing of the past, and aren't afraid it.

A few years ago, while my wife's BIL was still Gamnam, I used to go with hime to meetings etc, just to get out of the house. One day he asked my wife if I wanted to go as someone was giving a talk on AIDS. The girl doing the talking was in her late teens and HIV positive. The people she was talking to were all in their 60s and 70s. A couple of Americans were there, so I got talking to them, it turned out they were from the peace corp. They were supposed to be helping with the HIV situation. I said to them IMHO this is BS. When they asked why, I said this girl is talking to the wrong people. They would just be as happy playing cards with their friends. This girl should be talking in the high schools and colleges, to people who are most likely to get infected.

MORE than half of Beijing's prostitutes do not use condoms despite sexual transmission having replaced drug use as the most common infection route for HIV, state media says.

Just 47 per cent of the 90,000 sex workers in China's capital used condoms, the official Xinhua news agency quoted Fang Laiying, director of the municipal public health bureau, as saying on Tuesday.

Sexual transmission has also replaced intravenous drug use as the most common transmission route for the HIV virus for the first time in Beijing, accounting for 55 per cent of infections, the report said.

But the infection rate among the city's prostitutes was unknown as Beijing does not provide a testing program.

Free condoms are already provided in 22,000 venues in China's capital, including hotels and holiday resorts, and nearly 3,000 vending machines have been installed in entertainment sites, Xinhua said.

Condom machines are also to be installed at construction sites which employ more than 500 workers by the end of the year, Fang was quoted as saying.

there is more to minimising the problem than just supplying free condoms

Article may have hit some bad cylinders.

Let's call a spade a spade. Thai guys in their early 20s are predatory bottom dwellers. They easily manage to get 14-15+ year old girls to do the horizontal bop, then bail at the first opportunity. Pregnancy, STDs, HIV, and all other social diseases are passed around like candy. Lots of those guys doing the nasty are bi as well. This really is the new Thai norm, and it is growing by leaps and bounds.

What someone needs to do is teach the girls how to say NO. (Right) Then, if no doesn't work, teach them how to administer the latex.

not really a good solution as this may rise the risk of sexual agressions, taking fun with your body is nothing wrong but they should definately introduce the "no sex without latex" in the mind of young students 12-13 years old and initiate safe sex teaching at school and show them the risk of unprotected sex like genital illness wich are more speaking than someone with hiv that is looking good.

Thailand HAD one of the most successfull anti HIV awareness programs which have been CANCELED by the taksin govt' about 8 years ago. As this anti-aids talk 'is bad for the image of Thailand' and promoting condom use would 'promote sex amongst teenagers'.

The successfull and praised anti aids campaign was swapped for a bush-style approach, preaching abstinence and other moral talk that has been proven counter productive in other parts of the world.

This 'anti-porn' article is exactly that; an example of the current accents in the campaign: sex is bad, you should'nt do it and it is all the fault of porn. They claim a causal relation between the availability of porn and the increase in HIV...

Condom vending machines have been removed from university campuses in the Taksin era and the spirit of narrow-minded, counter productive abstinence preaching lives on today. The effect of the old anti aids campaigns have worn off, and now we are on the road to a larger increase in HIV cases as a result.

The government, and responsables of the current state of aids prevention have blood on their hands, because of overturning the old campaign, thus causing preventable death as youngsters get infected who could have been saved if they were informed.

It's a very meandering article short on fact, and appears to just be saying that there will a health campaign aimed at teenagers, seems to be about internet porn too. Most confusing. Guess it goes with the territory.

I don't believe the stats in Thailand regarding HIV infection, and think there are many scientific anomalies regarding HIV.

I have a 19 year old daughter and have explained to her in detail about the birds and the bees and the dangers of HIV/AIDs and other sexually transmitted diseases. It’s my duty as a parent because lifestyles have changed in the 21st century, lots of new dangers out there for those who are naive and not aware.

I’m in my 50s now and consider myself fortunate that I have lived through better times. During the 50s, 60s & 70s we never had any of this crap to worry about.

In those times, many girls were on the pill. The worst to worry about was catching a dose or getting a girl pregnant if one was really unlucky. None of these were fatal, although it did hold more of a social stigma in those days.

Yep, we’ve had the best of it and glad I’m not in my teens again just starting out in life. Sad times, indeed.

A friend once told me, if you enjoy something, don’t do it, because it’s bad for you.

I think you are missing the point. The article is suggesting that pornography is encouraging young girls to have sex, or to make them more receptive to having sex when their boyfriends ask for it.

The more relevant part of the article is this quote:

The Public Health found that only 39 per cent of young girls use condom regularly.

However, the article has failed to convince me of the link between low condom use and its assertion that young girls are looking at pornography. It just makes the two statements, and then expects the reader to conclude that the second follows logically from the first.

Hopefully it's the article that is not good. Surely the whole thing is to educate girls in the necessity of condom use. It should be that simple but, that kind of means accepting that young people will have sex. I must admit I'm not sure I'd handle the subject too well either. :D

Regarding health agencies in general. they have to be seen to be doing something and succeeding, but their success would threaten their existence and funding levels. :o

It probably would have been a less 'presentable' article if they went into the graphic details of the norms involving first time sex or at least first time seductions and porn (particularly internet and vcd/dvd). As for condom use, IMO that's kind of a different can of worms but obviously increasing incidents of first time sex or total # of seductions/persuasion to have sex will increase the amount of condom-less sex which by far and will likely always be the preferred and most common method.

In my experience from my freer days and from the late teens and 20 somethings that I know, plenty of guys will introduce their girls or 'targets' to sex and the 'mode' of having sex with them with porn. It gets some gals in the mood, and if not, at least it creates a first person 'precedent' to bring the subject up. "See what they're doing? That's all I wanted to talk about/do/try with you right NOW/etc."

As for condom use, often they are used to aid in the seduction and are quickly discarded once the deal is sealed and often while the 'sealing' is done. The condom is the insurance policy offered for the gal's biggest fear (pregnancy) and then once in process, the policy is often cancelled, and the girl will usually not insist on condom use once unsafe sex is established. Have done so on more than a few occasions when I cared less about my life in my younger days, and still often hear girls (often ones buying 'morning after' pills from our pharmacies) say that they used condoms the first time, but not the next 3 or 4 instances of intercourse in the same evening.

Common sense would suggest that young teenage girls are getting the virus from older men through sex who are likely getting it themselves from sharing needles or visiting prostitutes.

yeah, let's blame the old guys !!

According to the mainstream, there is a much greater risk of male to female transmission, so in that respect the figures would be very much what one would expect.

I don't know how it goes for HIV but with infections in general, a common pattern is for one person to be very much more infectious than others, and thus pass the disease on to a high number of people. That would require someone quite promiscuous and able, and would probably predict that it would be a younger male.

It's always been a puzzle to me how these guys get infected themselves as heterosexual males are least likely to become infected. My feeling is that homosexuality, and drug use is much more common than one might think.

Personally, I don't wholly go with the mainstream regarding HIV anyway. Too many anomalies.

About 10 or so years ago when I felt my son might be coming sexually active, I bought several dozen condoms for him and I never said anything, I left them on his bed.

No STD's. No HIV / AIDS. No unwanted pregnancies.

He had already had the 'talk' about sex over many years previously whenever the subject was brought up. Yes, it was awkward at first but after a while we could talk about it with ease.

If only more were to be done here to help parents, teenagers and others to be made aware of the problems and the dangers, there might be less pregnancies, STD's and Aids here.

Yes, many here seem prudish where sex and love is concerned. hel_l, many still believe it is taboo to hold hands in public. A kiss when others might see? A big no-no for so many ladies.

Make love? Only if the front door is locked and the bedroom curtains drawn!! No moans and groans in case the family hear!

Yet the goverment blame PORN for a big part of the problem? Get real. Give them sex education. All girl / All boy classes if needs be, but please educate them. They will no doubt still look at porn, but hopefully be wiser about the risks of imitating anything they see, especially as so few porn films advocate safe sex with the wearing of condoms.

Brought him to Amsterdam for his 21st, that's another tall story to tell.

To OP

Testosterone, hormones, teenagers. WAKE UP

50 years ago everything was hidden under the mattress inside the wardrobe, hidden shame.

25 years ago Aids was a gay problem I was living in SF then. We educated the masses Aids is not a class disease. Everyone is susceptible everyone.

STD, Hiv. IS EVERYWHERE, lower, much lower in western countries. Why EDUCATION.

Education, lowering the cultural barriers.

Education

Find a way. Find a way to educate the children.

Watching a very beautiful person die of aids not even 30 I can testify in all honesty the suffering pain sadness is overwhelming for some people.

It’s just not worth it.

Education.
