Today I had my "polyp of buccal mucosa" removed. This was a small (usually benign) tumor in the inside of my cheek which I had for some time and it seemed to be enlargening a bit plus getting in the way of my chewing so I finally decided to get it take care of. Last year I had a tooth break which I hadn't gotten fixed quickly and the little growth started adjacent the broken tooth, which I have read is somewhat comon. My Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) doctor here in Lopburi did the procedure on an outpatient hospital basis.

Although dreading the idea of feeling the cutting knife, the procedure was almost entirely painless. (I had worried a little since my friend in a different Khon Kaen hospital had a mole removed from under his arm and was most unimpressed at the doctor's pain management lack of concern. In fact, another patient having the same procedure at the same time passed out from the pain, the nurse retrieving his wife from the waiting room.) Anyway, I was first given 2 small tablets 1/2 hour before hand, then was placed on the operating room table. At least 4 nurses were assisting. My doctor first gave me three small, nearly painless shots of anesthetic into my cheek area. He said confidently you will have no further pain now. He was right! I don't really know what he was doing in my mouth for the next 30 minutes or so, but the next thing he said was "OK, it's all over".

I was given two tablet medications to take, one before and one after each meal, plus a mouth rinse solution. At the cashier's window, I paid a whopping 6800 baht for the entire cost, DR, hospital, and meds. Medical care here in Lopburi is so very inexpensive, and there is no fear of being taken advantage of by being a farang. A lab analysis for cancer (supposedly unlikely) was also included. There are a few stitches to be removed in his office in about a week.

These inside cheek polyps are not uncommon in aging people, as well as younger folks as well. My ENT told me a full 30% of his hospital surgeries are for similar conditions!

Anybody facing something like this, don't worry, get it done now and overwith. It's a piece of cake.

It's a good posting. Most of us worry about this sort of thing. Glad it went well.

Update after one month. The stitches were the type which dissolve, and they have nicely done so. Can't even feel inside my cheek where the incision was made. Everything is completely healed up. The doctor here, the hospital staff, everybody was great.

I had some trepidations about having this polyp removed because after checking it out on the web, and seeing some post-surgery photos, the process looked nasty. Not at all so, and completely pain free.

Yeah, and I would have seen the face of GOD! Thanks just the same neverdie.

4800 baht (hospital total inc meds)

2000 my ENT doctor

6800 total

Would have been at least 10 times that in the States.

Since I got a plate and 3 false teeth, I've noticed a growth that sounds similar. It is kinda elongated and bled a lot when I bit into it.

My new tooth did bite into my gum but this growth is higher up - could it be related?

What exactly did yours look like?
