Retirement Vs Thai Wife Extension

Featured Replies

When I applied for my first extension of stay (Non Immigrant) in 2005 I intended to apply for a 'support Thai Wife' option, however, the Immigration Officer decided that I should have a 'Retirement' extension. I have renewed on that basis ever since.

My wife is Thai and we have been legally married for well over 30 years with two children, both of whom live in the UK.

That leaves just me and my wife living in Thailand.

Although I have made provision for my next renewal on Retirement basis, I want to know if it is possible for me to apply on the basis of support Thai wife since the financial requirements are less. Useful with the downturn in exchange rates.

I have read through the latest Immigration Rules unofficial translation (November 2008) but am still unsure. Seems that you can go from 'support Thai wife' to 'Retirement but not the other way.

Any pointers?

You can do it and there has never been anything that said you can't.

Immigration will not want to do it because it's a little more work for them.

You may have to be a little persistent. And have all the documents required plus your wife with you when you go.

Yes. You have always been able to change but they do not like it . As said it is more work for them.

I have always wondered what extra work is involved?, look at your photo's, call the local cop shop in your town to verify you do live there, take an extra look at your marriage certificate etc.

Personally I find the deal attractive, 400k in the bank as apposed to 800k, or 40k as opposed to 65k per month income.

Well I have until May 09 to think about it!

Thanks Posters.

My wife and I know the local Immigration office staff and they are usually helpful although the extra work involved may not be appreciated. They know we are a legal couple and live locally so I don't see a problem if the rules allow for it.

I shall take my wife along with the extra documentation and ask for the change.

Peter
