I see the 'Vinyl' French restaurant is closed up again; second time in a week. Some Thais in a shop up the road told me it was now closed for good, due to the owner being caught indulging with his waitress' by his missus! ......... The poor girl should make him eat some of his own food as a punishment....lolz...

Seriously, anyone else heard anything? It isn't an unpleasant place to have a beer, just leave the grub alone:)

:o:D:D:D

Quite a few contenders for that sort of thread Dave. Must be getting close to Bangkok / Pattaya / Phuket closures per capita.

However, there was a sign up there today (in thai and english) saying it would be open tomorrow.

So maybe all the gossip is not quite right..........but then again he does (did?) have a couple of quite attractive staff :wai:

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Paddys was open today :D Didnt see any customers though. Pity.

Good way of interviewing his staff :o

Lolz......u could have something there.

This guys wife is very lovely, but from what I have been told he's just one of these who can't keep it in his trousers. The waitress, apparantly, was only one of many who have come to the wifes attention lately:) She, the wife has left him and all of the licenses are in her name.

I me his wife before I met him. Very nice lady and appears hard working as well. I've met the father as well a couple of times. Hope all is well but you have to think long and hard before settling down here (Thailand I mean). Dipping your wick outside of the marital bed is far more easily done undetected in a large town like Pattaya but even in Pattaya you would have to be a prize chump to go banging one of your own staff ! You either screw non of them or all of them. Otherwise you make favourites. Good job he does not have duck on the menu or he may well be feeding them part of his anatomy !

If you lived here then you would know that the comings and goings of bars in Buriram is of great interest. Perhaps the discussion here and elsewhere is an attempt to find the truth.

OK, so don't read them then !

How on earth do you get angry at a discussion board where people express interest and opinions about businesses which, if they had half a brain, would have found this forum and be here promoting their wares.

I could tell you tales from Paddy's which are 100% true as witnessed by me but which would only serve to discredit him further.

Seriously, people just want to know what is going on, like has Aiden been bothered to open his place today ? or has the French place been closed for good ? These are businesses and as such as in the public domain. Just as my businesses accept both praise and criticism, I do not need others to come to my defence. Both Aiden and the guy at Vinyl have been made aware of this forum and there very lack of participation show how much they value our ramblings I would say.

Hi

Some of us do know the guys on this forum personally and whilst I do occassionally 'take the pizz', I believe nearly every regular poster is a good guy and fairly polite (except for TBWG aka Dave No2). :D

Nothing in this thread so far has breached any forum rules as far as I can see, if you have a grievance with any comments made just hit the 'Report' button, it's bottom left of every post.

Vinyl the French restaurant had a good number of customers at 3:30p.m. and again at 6;30p.m. on Tuesday December 9th. The Irish bar was closed up at 3:30p.m. on Tuesday Dec 9th. What is the deal with a new Bar? (sign in English) open on Thani Road North of Rom Buri Road? It is North of Buriram Supply on that side of the street. About one block from the old Red Robin? bakery location.

If you are in Business, a good way of losing customers is closing when you want, if you are in the retail or bar trade which i have done both, you must be open from early morning to late at night, maybe on the quiet nights do a theme evening, this happened with the bamboo, was opening at 7ish then 2 in the afternoon, this is when it first opened.

Vinyl is benefiting from the problems over the water at Sawatdee Krap bar and obviously because of Paddy's erratic opening hours and lack of staff / food / beer etc.

If they revamped their menu with some rustic French / Mediterranean food I think they could clean up for the long run.

Are they doing anything for Xmas ? They should push the boat out what with the problems at their only two real competitors.

Do you honestly think there would be any demand for 'Rustic french or Mediterranean' fodder in Buriram? I really do wish this boy the best of luck, but cannot see him being there in another six months! In the long term the only 'cleaning up' they'll be doing is after they are closed down for good! The CURSE OF THE BURIRAM BARS! All the handful of resident farang that frequent this place really want is somewhere to meet their pals for a few beers, it doesn't matter where or what food is on offer, as 90% of those guys never order food.

Those shop units on that soi are renting at 8-10k baht per month. The Vinyl place is a double unit, add on a few exes & I can easily assume he needs at least 1k baht each day to cover expenses, probably 1500 baht?,thats without buying a bottle of beer to resell. How can he last?

Basically I agree with you.

You are not far off the mark with rent. Add on electric, water and the like and you're probably up to about 20k a month. If serving food all day then you'll need 2 shifts of staff so at 1 chef on 10k and 2 staff on 5k each you've another 40k a month. Add in a salary for his missus at 10k and himself at 30k and you're up to about 90k so about 3k a day.

If margins on beer are 50% then he'd have to sell Bt9k a day if just beer. If food margins are 100% (min 200% is the norm but in Buriram I don't think so), then he'd need to sell 6k of food, if only food. Bring together a mixture of the two and you have say 4k food (giving 2k profit) and 3k of beer (giving 1k profit). That would be sales of 7k a day over say 15 hours opening and you need to sell an average of only Bt500 an hour. Not too hard I think.

Of course, at those levels there is no return on investment, only covering costs, though he could (perhaps does) live in, thus saving rent. He also rents out motorbikes as an additional income stream.

As for food, I think the consensus is that it needs to be both redirected and improved. Eliminating waste is essential in this market as the low margins do not allow for wastage of produce. Daily specials al la Pattaya's Shenanigans, Jamesons etc. would appear to be the order of the day with a roast Sunday lunch a definite I'd say. What direction is the current menu ? I can't decipher where it is supposed to be from except the Thai dishes and thus, to me, it has no identity food wise.

I see totally where you are coming from but what is wrong with home baked croissants and a decent coffee at breakfast time ? Some sweets like cakes (not the Thai rubbish) will attract the girls, who will bring their other halfs. Ice creams, gelatos etc. I know you cannot do everything.

My worry about somewhere in Buriram is that you don't make enough for a full compliment of staff so you and the missus work the business which will kill most relationships. The current dearth of options in the area should have been used as a massive kick start to kill them off even if the competition gets it's act together.

I'm not sure he'll fail but he will probably not be the first to fall by the wayside whatever happens.

Good analysis. Having eaten there a time or two, I can only say that the food is RUBBUSH:) I do know he started doing some baking, I tried his 'apple pie' which was nothing like any apple pie I have ever eaten ! Absolutely vile! There is french bread on sale, however it is as heavy as lead! His pizza is ok & will fill a hungry hole without too many complaints. The breakfast ranks as one of the worst I have ever been served in my 12 years residence in this country!
