hi all,

i have a western digital 1 terabyte hard drive which i bought from australia ealier this year. recently i haven't been able to access it via my computer. :o i can plug it in and it appears in device manager, but it won't appear in windows. if i uninstall, windows will detect and reinstall upon reboot. the drive does not work on other computers. the power lights work, and all signs point to the drive being corrupted. this is also what western digital are telling me.

i'd like to know if there are any businesses in bangkok which provide data recovery services. basically, what i'd like them to do is access the drive and temporarily transfer the contents elsewhere (ie another drive, network), fix my terabyte drive by reformatting, then transfer my files back. does this sound doable? are there any places in bkk who could look at the drive and tell me if this is possible?

thanks for any input.

if your hardrive isn't physically damaged, any IT guy will be able to recover your data.

if you were in samui we could be in touch for this ;-)

I've had a couple of external drives do that. In most cases it's been something with the box's interface, not the drive itself.

Open up your box to see if the drive has an accessible IDE or SATA connection. If so, buy one of those USB-to-IDE/SATA connectors for about 200 baht ....

Disconnect your drive from inside the external box and connect the connector cable to it. The USB-IDE/SATA should come with a power cable too. Plug in the power and your drive should power up. Plug the USB connector into a USB port and the drive should be recognized .... if it's still OK.

Run some diagnostics to make sure the drive is OK. If it's not, and you can't read anything from it, THEN data recovery may be able to help you. If the drive is OK, buy a new external enclosure for a few hundred baht.
