I've just been reading details of the new government line-up. Not surprisingly, many of them have strong ties to previous corruption, criminal or other suspect dealings....

There must be some honest, unselfish Thais somewhere who, although lacking in government experience, would do a more honest job than some of the recent candidates!

Who can you suggest? Who do you admire?

My proposal is Dr Porntip Rojanasunan - her of the freaky hairdos and Thailand's leading forensics expert.

How about you? Who is your candidate for the role of honest politician?

Simon

I do not have a mp to remember because I do not follow politics as such , there is ,however , an immigration officer that sticks in my memory . On arrival at Don Muang , he perused my passport for a while , gave me one of those 'Nice smiles ' and told me i could not be the person in the passport , I asked why , he said "This shows you as 66 and you look younger than me at 59 " , I suddenly felt 10 feet tall , almost gave him a hug :o .

Seksan Prasertkul

Gothom Areeya

And for someone completely away from the political arena, Nga Caravan would be great.

Chuan was a pretty awful PM by the way.

In the 5 years i've been here & out of all of the Thai people i've me during that time, i haven't met one that i admire..

I'm sure that there are honest & unselfish Thai's out there like the OP says but as of yet, i haven't met any..

i admire the pack of wild thai teenage boys who found me when my motorbike ran out of gas on a dark kanchanaburi road late at night... they push-towed me and my bike to a gas station... and wouldn't even accept my offer to fill their gas tanks too..

i admire the phitsanulok policeman who when i asked where the airline ticket office was in town, told me to hop on his bike and drove me there.

the guy who chased after me in chiang rai when i left my atm card in the machine...

etc etc...

A really nice guy in person also!

Cheers

Wow! so you actually met the guy Percivil.

I admire the ferangs who just love to bow before their Thai heros. Or the ferang Police volunteers - who like to play at being cops. I know thats not Thais but I just cant think of one.

None. I've met a lot of nice people, a few good people, but can't say there's been anybody that I admire.

Umm,Umm,Umm,......reminds me of the joke of the wife saying to her husband during love making " darling ,you are taking along time to climax tonight ",. he replies, " yes love, i cant think of anybody "

Definetely Mr. Chuvit Kamolvisit, the massage parlour tycoon turned politician !

Don't know about his honesty and integrity, but he's certainly outspoken and doesn't easily bow to pressure.

I second that. Foreigners may know him as Mr. Condom, but he has had a profound influence on public health throughout the world. His common sense, courage and integrity makes him a standout. Maybe it's his Australian blood, but he's a tough guy that tries to do the right thing. This is one guy that has put the good of Thailand and the poor above personal profit. People like him come along so infrequently, but when they show up, they make a difference.

c'mon guys, you too hard on them.

ain't easy being a politician in Thailand, half of their reputation is ruined by lies; the other half is ruined by the truth

No offence intended, especially in the season of goodwill - but if what you write is your honest opinion, why are you here ?

Maybe you live in the wrong part of Thailand. Up here in Phetchabon, I've met so many nice, friendly honest people, it's impossible to list them all. There has been the occasional wrong 'un, but mostly from out of the area, at fairs etc, who try the double-the-price-for-farang krap, but I just avoid them.

I do notice the difference in places like Pattaya, for instance, but maybe that's down to a combination of the way farangs / tourists behave there, as much as these areas attracting the "make a quick buck by tricking the farang" kind of Thai people. :D

As for Thais I admire, that others may have heard of, I'd currently go for a chap called Datsakorn, who plays in midfield for the Thai football team. Apart from being a really good player, he wears the shirt with real pride, and inspires the team around him. He also has the (for me), essential nasty side to his play, most opponents only mess with him once. :o

I'd vote for my Father in Law. He's smart, got his own business and not really overly concerned with wealth. Speaks plainly and takes NO Sh*T, a real azz kicker and name taker back in his day and still not a joke now. Down to earth, likes a lil' 70's Karaoke , Muy Thai and Cock Fighting. Came from poverty and built his fortune with his own hands and wits.

He would be awesome in politics with the right management team.
