No Purchasing Sex For Norwegians?

Reading the BBC web page today and saw this. Bit of a bummer if you have come to Thailand for some 'fun'.

On the other hand, maybe this violates forum rules. Apologies if it does.

New Norway law bans buying of sex

Norway says the new law targets the clients and not the prostitutes

A new law has come into force in Norway making the purchase of sex illegal.

Norwegian citizens caught paying for prostitutes at home or abroad could face a hefty fine or a six-month prison sentence, authorities say.

The prison sentence could be extended to three years in cases of child prostitution.

The Norwegian authorities say they want to stamp out sex tourism and street prostitution by targeting clients rather than prostitutes.

"We think buying sex is unacceptable because it favours human trafficking and forced prostitution," deputy Justice Minister Astri Aas-Hansen was quoted as saying by the AFP news agency.

How are they going to monitor the Norwegians when they are abroad? I don't think Wire-tapping is going to do a lot.

Further down the report...

"Prostitutes will be offered access to free education"

...

Presumably when Nils' gets handcuffed down in Pattaya by the Norwegian members of the Tourist Police Volunteers, they will also take little Noi off to Norway for a thorough schooling?

And now this ... the oldest profession of the world wiped out by Norway!

But cheer up! Many countries have tried to outlaw prostitution, to no avail. Might as well outlaw eating or drinking ...

BTW, prostitution is also illegal in Thailand. Might come as a shocking news to many. :o:D :D

What it means is that if you are convicted abroad for buying sex, when you arrive home, even if you have been punished abroad, you can punished anew in your home country (Norway). Rather like Gary Glitter had to face travel restrictions and signing the sex-offenders register when he returned from prison in Vietnam.

Of course this relies on your chances of being prosecuted for buying sex in LOS...

Actually prostitution was decriminalised in Thailand in 1992. Pimping and procuring remain arrestable offenses however, with added penalties if the sex worker is under 18.

Another truly stupid idea from the Scandinavians. So what next, punish drug users, but let the dealers go.

Are they crazy? The first doesn't deserve 6 months jail IMHO, but only THREE YEARS for child prostitution? Give me a break, should be thirty.

The PC bandwagon moves on, the prostitutes are innocent victims and the men vile predators, I suppose obese trollops at the local nightclubs will be pleased with the extra action.

A 6 month jail sentence and the police using wire taps, Guesthouse will no doubt be dancing in the streets at the news.

No but I somewhat amused by the selfrightous indignation over this. How does this impact anyone who is not Norwegian? Or more precisely a Norwegian 'John'?

And anyway who's in Thailand for the prostitutes? I thought it was the culture and food that was the big draw.
