Hi guys !

I am an experienced British medical specialist (General Surgeon) contemplating to move to Thailand after marrying my Thai fiancee next month.Do you think that it would be a good move ?

Do you expatriates living there, would need the services of someone like me ?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated

Cheers,

Nelson

Talk to Dr Patrick Dickson, British Dispensary, 109 Sukhumvit Road Bangkok 10110. Tel 66 2 252 8056 The British Dispensary is a long standing medical practice. Good luck.

I don't know about exceptions for Embassy medical staffs, but if you want to practice medicine here, you must - as far as I know - obtain a license from the Thai Medical Council.

The requirements are outlined at:

http://www.tmc.or.th/html/organize/regulation.html

And - you must be a graduate of one of the Medical Schools listed at:

http://www.tmc.or.th/html/main/index2.php

Note that you must be a permanent resident (in order to appear on a house registration), and that the medical licensing examination (including essay portion) are conducted in Thai language.

If others know of the above rules not being enforced, please add your insights.

Good luck!

As I understand it the rules are presently relaxed for foreign doctors to be permitted to treat foreigners and that was why I referred the enquirer to a British doctor who is a long time medical practitioner in Thailand. He would know the rules.

many thanks to all of you

I will just do that

It is nowhere as complex as painted by others Nelson. Go for it.

Could I hear from any physicians living in Thailand who have taken the exam for a license or are practicing with a non-Thai organization; e.g., Red Cross? I am a physician and offered my services at no charge in any capacity (basically to assist the medical staff). All hospitals declined my offers. I was told unofficially that Farang doctors are not welcome at any Thai medical facility with or without a license.
