What is 2009 going to be the year of the Bangkok fires.... Not a good start. Part of me wonders if these fires are not created on purpose for the insurance money... With the downturn it would not suprise me.....

Does all of this seem too much of a coincidence, or am I just being cynical?

I was thinking the same thing. It's also possible that fires in Thailand are more common occurrences than we were previously aware, and we are only hearing about them now because the government is "cracking down" on fire safety, and the Thai news media are playing along. Or possibly because one very high-profile, internationally-reported fire at Santika attracted so much attention from around the world, and the Thai media are riding out the wave of sensationalism to stay in the lime light as long as they can.

In business we know Thailand is famous for copying, didn't realise this until now, but obviously they are not too creative when it comes to exit strategy for a run down business, burn it!
