Featured Replies

Hi i read that you can use SErC to help with appetitie control, but what is the recommended dosage as the dosage on the instert is for vertigo?

Also does anyone have any successful experience with Serc as a wieight loss aide??

I know there was a thread about this already but the success stories never made it in.

As a doctor, I have had no direct experience with this drug. I strongly urge you to see a physician for a full check up before using this medicine especially for obesity as that is still an investigational use. The drug is not without side effects though they are usually minor and infrequent. Also be aware that the drug used for weight loss is a modified formula of betahistine (serc) which has been around for a couple of decades. (There is some speculation the modifications are insignificant and only designed to obtain patent protection for and otherwise freely available generic drug.) Since you cannot get the new drug and will probably go ahead with Serc, I'll tell you the dosage used in one experimental trial was 24mg twice per day and was used in conjunction with an antidepressant. I can also tell you there was an impressive list of reasons to be excluded from the study so, again, I strongly suggest you visit with an internist and discuss trying betahistine. Also, the results of at least one study show that if you are a woman (I assume you are) and over 50, it doesn't work. Especially for Hispanic women. Go figure that one out...

Sorry. In the study I am familiar with, the antidepressant was being given to see if betahistine would stop the weight gain usually associated with it. So, you should not assume you need an antidepressant to go along with your Serc. Again, you should not try this medicine or any other without having a physical exam and discussing it with the doctor.
