Viewing Windows Folder Sizes In Explorer

Featured Replies

Windows Explorer does not display folder sizes in any root directory, it only shows the size of individual files therein.

Are there any recommendations for a nice free or shareware utility that neatly shows folder sizes, preferably in a graphical form, so that one can quickly see what folders are taking up the most resources without clicking for the Properties of each folder? There's hundreds of freeware and shareware utilities out there so looking for recommendations from users.

I have 2 external USB backup drives and I would like to balance out their storage better so it would be handy to have a quick and easy way of finding and viewing the memory hogs.

This will be on a Vista platform.

Many thanks!

Treesize - both free and pay versions.

I've tried TreeSize, but prefer FolderSize - http://foldersize.sourceforge.net/about.html

Folder Size for Windows adds a new column to the Details view in Windows Explorer. The new column shows not only the size of files, but also the size of folders. It keeps track of which folders you view, and scans them in the background so you can see complete size of all files within the folder. It's very useful for cleaning up your disk.

"Cleaning / balancing disk storage" - exactly why I use it. :o

Doesn't work on Vista :o

Whoops! Sorry - didn't see this bit:

Additional Notes

Folder Size for Windows runs on Windows 2000 and XP, though has been tested almost exclusively on Windows XP. Sorry, not Vista...

Well, I replaced Explorer with Total Commander, which is light years better than MS Explorer

You won't need any additional program to view file for folder size and you have a 2 pane view

Its a free utility and IMHO the ultimate file/directory explorer.

:D Interesting utility - I'm playing with it now. Reminds me a lot of "good old" Norton Commander. Those were the days.... :o
