From CNN

NEW YORK (AP) -- Actress Sandra Bullock has donated $1 million to the American Red Cross to help relief efforts in countries affected by the deadly earthquake and tsunamis in southern Asia and eastern Africa.

Bullock, whose screen credits include "Miss Congeniality," "While You Were Sleeping" and "Speed," contacted the American Red Cross last week, the organization said Monday.

She also donated $1 million after the September 11 terror attacks.

"At this critical time, I am grateful to Sandra Bullock for once again demonstrating her leadership, compassion and belief in our global humanitarian mission," said American Red Cross President and Chief Executive Officer Marsha Evans in a statement.

"Sandra continues to enable our lifesaving work and is a model for personal generosity."

Jackie Chan and Chow Yun-fat donate to quake relief

29/12/2004 - 09:27:19

Hollywood stars Jackie Chan and Chow Yun-fat are headlining a string of Hong Kong celebrity donations to earthquake and tsunami relief efforts in southern Asia.

Kung <deleted> king Chan pitched in 500,000 Hong Kong dollars (€47,000) to the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) the group said in a statement.

Chan said the donation is small but he hopes it will prompt more people to give money.

“A token 500,000 is nothing for the disaster areas, but I want to have a spearheading effect,” he said at a cheque presentation ceremony.

Appealing for donations, Chan said: “The accumulation of droplets becomes a river.”

Chow, who starred in The Replacement Killers and Anna and the King, gave 200,000 Hong Kong dollars (€18,800) to a disaster relief fund set up by the Apple Daily, the mass-market paper reported today.

Also donating to the newspaper’s fund was Stephen Chow, who directed and starred in the comedy Shaolin Soccer.

Holidaying action star Jet Li and his family evacuated to Doha, Qatar after their hotel in the Maldives was swamped by tidal waves, the Apple Daily reported today, quoting a friend who was with Li.

Li reportedly injured his foot by knocking it against a piece of floating furniture as he protected his daughter from the waves.

A magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck off Indonesia’s coast on Sunday, triggering tidal waves that hit the coastlines of India, Sri Lanka, Thailand and as far as Somalia, killing more than 60,000.

HK pop stars help rake in donations for tsunami victims

HONG KONG (AP) _ Hong Kong's total donations to tsunami-stricken areas climbed to US$50 million as pop stars like Andy Lau and Nicholas Tse helped rake in cash at weekend charity concerts, media reports said Monday.

Lau appeared with Leon Lai, Aaron Kwok, Leo Koo and Alan Tam at a Sunday night fund raiser aired by local broadcaster TVB. The event took in 47 million Hong Kong dollars (US$6.0 million) as of late Sunday, Ming Pao Daily News reported.

Wearing white sweat shirts with the Chinese characters "delivering care united in all four seas'' inscribed in calligraphy, local celebrities wrote good will messages for disaster victims on a white lantern.

Tse and fellow singer Joey Yung and the female pop duo Twins led the "Hand in Hand Delivering Warmth to South Asia'' charity performance, organized by their record label, Emperor Entertainment Group, which raised HK$4.1 million (US$526,000).

The stars sang "We Are the World,'' the theme song of the 1985 Live Aid concert for hunger victims. The song was made into a single featuring Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen and Diana Ross.

Hong Kong stars have either visited or plan trips to disaster areas. They include singers Cecilia Cheung and Jaycee Chan _ the son of Jackie Chan _ local media reported.

Another star-studded charity show was planned for Friday.

Separately, visiting "American Idol'' reject-turned-sensation William Hung also lent a hand, holding charity sales of his albums and posters, the Apple Daily newspaper reported.

Locals from all walks of life have chipped in for tsunami victims, from vegetable vendors to top tycoon Li Ka-shing. The Ta Kung Pao newspaper reported Monday the total amount raised in Hong Kong is approaching 400 million Hong Kong dollars (US$50 million).

Meanwhile, Hong Kong recorded a seventh casualty in the tsunami that swept southern Asian coastlines.

Markus Knoesel died in the Thai town of Krabi, a staff member at his employer, German Swiss International School, told The Associated Press Monday on the condition of anonymity. The staffer declined to provide further details.

Ming Pao reported Knoesel is a German citizen and that his girlfriend found his body.

The Hong Kong government is still trying to locate 60 residents believed to be in the disaster areas. - AP
