A 27 grm protien bar is 150 baht at my local gym - seems a bit steep. Is it an essential item after a work out to prevent muscle mass loss - or promote growth :o

Up to an hour after a workout is the perfect time to get some proteins in your body. It is said that it will help muscle build up. I believe it but i would take my own protein shake.

Gyms are often such ripoffs. That's why i like training at home once done i take a protein shake i made from some protein powder.

Never buy protein bars - they are overpriced, full of chemicals, and are difficult to digest. Spend 150baht on cooked chicken from any supermarket and you'll get ten times more protein, without the junk. Despite what manufacturers preach, protein bars (and powders) are not superior to whole-foods - the single advantage they hold is convenience, yet in Thailand protein bars must be refrigerated and go mushy when not kept cool. Hardly convenient! However it makes good business-sense for the gyms to sell them - they have a 50% mark-up and are filled with so much junk that they have a 6 year shelf-life.

Personally, I've had the best results when training in the morning and eating immediately after working out - a post-workout meal. I made this meal the largest of the day and included lean protein sources either meat, egg whites, or dairy and simple carbs from fruit. This worked for me, I think, because sugars spike the blood sugar and this shuttles proteins and other nutrients to where they are needed quickly and effectively. My subsequent meals/snacks throughout the day were progessively smaller (protein and complex carbs) and I avoided carbs after 4pm.

Personally im not against protein shakes they are handy. However i would not use them as the main source of protein. I use them as a supplement and try to eat healthy the rest of the day. I workout at night so i would not have a real large meal after my workout.

Protein is essential for muscle growth, and for muscle maintenance when you get as old as I am (61). I make a preotein shake and drink half 30 mins before workout and the other half right after. This are the times your body most needs the protein.

If you're interested, I use a banana, oatmeal, yogurt, protein powder (from GNC - cost thb 59 per serving), water and creatine (n the half I drink before the workout).

I buy a kg of protein powder at the some pharmacy branch. Its around a 1000 bath for 30 servings that makes it around 33 bath per serving. But now im not using it because im in a cutting phase. Once i start building again ill buy 2 5kg boxes and import them from the US its much cheaper and higher quality.

Can anyone do this? I'd be interested. I've always noticed that supplements cost Americans far less, what's your secret robblok? we're all ears....

What secret ? Just order it online at a reputable shop and let it send over. The only drawback might be customs and the fact that you have to pay with western union.

But it's not good to make it and not consume all within 5 minutes. Once water is added to the Protein powder you have 5 minutes to drink it. Leaving half to drink after your workout means your after workout drink contains NO PROTEIN....NOT GOOD!

Where would the protein go to ? evaporate ? im not trying to flame you just curious if you can come up with a logical explanation.

Protein is the best thing you can do for your body within half an hour of your excercises. I have been getting good results from eating some beef or chicken with low fat milk after the gym, and eat more protein during the day to keep it in the blood. You will not hurt as much the next day when you have the milk, and a lot of power lifters use 300 grams of protein a day to get better gains. That much protein is hard on the kidneys, and we should all use moderation in what we eat and drink. :o

Cheers!
