New Passport

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just got myself a new passport as my old one was full. The missus picked it up from my embassy today as I'm currently outside of Bangkok and couldn't do it myself.

The visa expires on Sunday and I know I need to transfer the stamp from my old passport to the new one. Wont be in Bangkok until Saturday, immigration will be shut then. Have asked the tour operator who I'm using for this weekend's visa run, if I can get it transferred at the border before I cross over. One rep there said I could, one said I couldn't. I'm under the impression that doing it at the border is a grey area, it's preferred to be done at Suan Plu but this will just be nigh on impossible because of the time constraints.

Has anyone ever done the visa transfer from old to new passport at the border, and if so, any problems or has anyone been turned away? If they send me back to Bangkok to do it on Sunday I'll be faced with an overstay which I want to avoid. I know people will advise me to get myself to Bangkok beforehand but it will really be a big pain in the bottom. Please advise. Thanks

Several threads with similar information exist, but basically they don't transfer the visa, just your "permission to stay" stamp. You aren't on overstay until after that date, not the visa date. And carry the old passport with you when you enter and exit.

Immigration cannot transfer Visas to a new passport , only entry stamps. If you are talking about a Visa you will have to carry your old passport with your new one.

Yes, yes I know this. Sorry, I meant the stamp being transferred. Is it possible to do this at the border or is it absolutely the rule that it needs to be done at your local immigration office?

If your visa is going to expire, on what basis will you re-enter if you depart the country? Visa exempt? Tourist Visa? Seems to me, you take both passports, get stamped out, then stamp back in with the new passport. Perhaps you could use the search function to find the threads with similar circumstances. Not sure why you need to transfer a stamp from your question.

I don't remember if you have to sign when the stamp is transfered.

Perhaps your wife can take the passports to immigration and see if they can transfer the stamp

without you being present.

You can use both passports at the border. You don/t have to have the stamps transfered first.

Show both passport at Thai immigration they will stamp you out in your old passport. Use your new passport to get the visa and entry/departure stamps for the the other country showing your old passport with the Thai departure stamp.

Use both passports again when entering Thailand show them visa in old passport and enter the country.

It's been done by many people without a problem.

You dont have to be there physically, but there is a form to be filled in and signed requesting the transfer, but guess if the OP doesnt have a form, just sending the Mrs in is not going to help.

Here is the form.

Exactly the answer I was both hoping for and looking for Ubonjoe, thanks!

Blimey sometimes many readers make a mountain out of a molehill with a simple question.

Leaving Sunday so will let you know how it goes.

Thats exactly what I did, but its 11 years ago now. I had absolutely no problem at Aranyaprathet, walked back in and they looked at my old passport and new one and gave me the 90 day stamp ( I was on non-immigrant o), hopefully it will still be the same

regards

Freddie

It is helpful when people give concise information when asking their questions.

The others were answering your question about doing a transfer of your stamps and just hadn't got around to answering your other question.

You say your visa expires. Is it the permit to stay or the visa? If visa you should do the border run on Saturday. The expiration date says use before I beleive.
