Harrow Vs Shrewsbury

Featured Replies

We have a ten year old at Shrewsbury and we are thinking of moving her to Harrow. Anyone have any experience they can share? Our daughter is well ahead of her age (native English) and because Shrewsbury is >70% non-native English speakers (nothing wrong in itself) we are concerned that the (non-math) classes aren't as advanced as they would be if they had 100% english speakers. Any thoughts?

I know nothing on the schools you mention but do everything you can to keep your daughter's mind active. I was ahead of my time and as those less able dragged their heels I got bored and lost all enthusiasm. I ended up jumping ship at 15 from being an A1 student.

If something is holding her back, then something is wrong and you are right t be concerned about it. If others are not advanced, they need to be left behind, not drag your daughter down to their level.

I don't know if any school in Thai would admit native English speakers only. Could be, some may have dedicated classes but I don't know how that would work. Mine (in Japan, where my daughter goes, is mixed, probably not more than 30% are kids from English speaking families).

As anywhere, international schools live off the expats (or locals who can afford and get the place) who come from wherever and the bills are mostly paid by their companies. Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese, westerners from English and non-English speaking countries.

The schools know that and they catch up through smaller classes and 2 teachers (main teacher and assistant for each class). They claim (in fact, insist) the quality of education is on pair or better with one-language schools and is portable throughout the world.

I am happy so far but too short time to tell.

wife used to teach at harrow....

pretty sure the non-native english speaking population is a bit higher...mainly as there are a few more Thai indians for instance who tend to grow up speaking it.....

Shrewsbury was started by a guy who left Harrow and wanted to start a better school. After just five years or so in existence, Shrewsbury has overtaken Harrow on an international list of best international schools in Thailand and is ranked in the top 5 for quality. That's what I heard from those that know the story, anyway. I think it might be smaller than Harrow and that lets them keep a firmer eye on the quality.
