I 've just bought a "So road Movie : Media Player Hard Disc Ultra Mobile" from Dane-Elec. The box says it supports DivX 3/4/5, Xvid, MPEG 1-2-4, DVD (IFO, VOB), VCD (DAT), AVI, etc. I don't have a clue what all this means...

The idea is that I would download movies at home on this media player. When on the road I hope to connect this player to the TV's in the hotels or guesthouses where I stay. The sales person in the shop told me this was just what I needed.

Before I start unwrapping this present to myself, I 'm having doubts about my plans. I never told the sales person I spend my vacations on the road in Asia. I usually sleep in small hotels and guesthouses with (very) old televisions : will I be able to connect my media player to these televisions (the box says an A/V cable is included), will these old TV's be able to read the files on the hard disc (in what format should I download), will there be a 'region problem' between my media player bought in Europe, and the hotel TV's mostly in Asia..... ?

Maybe there are other problems I'm not seeing?

Even very old, well you know what I mean by old, have an AVI input. The box you have converts the differant codecs into a signal that the TV can understand. Good bits of kit for taking your movies on the road. You should have no problems :o

So... what you do is you fill up your media player from your computer and make sure it can play whatever you put on it on your TV at home.

If the movies play at home, they will also play on the road.

There are many different video formats but whether or not they play depends entirely on your media box, not on the TV you use to watch them. No region code issues.

Thanks for you replies. Now I can open my box :o

One other thing, would it be possible to take my Media Player to Panthip Plaza and ask to download some movies on it?

Thanks a lot.

Just make sure the player supports PAL. That's what Thailand uses, not sure if they use it in your country, but I know that it was an exercise in frustration attempting to hook up my US videocard from my computer to the TV since the US uses NTSC....

Yes, thanks, it supports PAL.

Any thoughts about getting the hard disk loaded with movies somewhere in Bangkok? Is Panthip Plaza still the place to go? I remember last year everybody offered to download a gazzillion of games on my PSP for nearly nothing. Maybe I can do the same with movies on this hard disc?
