Thai Girl Nearly Gets Scammed

Featured Replies

A girl that has just started to work for me asked me to help her. She said that her boyfriend (at this point i did not know she had only new him for 4 weeks and met on a chat site) from England is sending her a parcel by currier. Can i have a look and see if it has arrived in bkk. Had a look at the web site diplomatic curriers never herd of the before. But she give me the tracking No and sure enough 1 parcel 29kg in KL waiting to go to BKK.

Next day she says she has to pay $780 duty/tax. The boyfriend cant send her the money because he works offshore. So can she pay the duty. The guy says that he has hid £15'000 and some diamonds in the parcel, so don't tell customs.

So she gets the next bus back to BKK to get the money from her family to get the parcel.

Luckily before she could transfer the money to the bogus currier company, one of her friends told her that it was a scam.

So its not only farangs getting scammed

Scam it certainly seems to be but how does her friend know and what is the scam?

i.e. how does he benefit from it?

<edit : or were you the target of the scam by h*r?>

Out of curiosity how do you know he didn`t hide £15'000 and some diamonds in the parcel if it didn`t arrive?

I am guessing her friend had heard of the scam from someone else that had been scammed

He would benefit from receiving the $780 that she thinks is going to pay the duty/tax

He had called her and told her that the money was in the parcel.

I have some money in an account I am managing. 10000000 baht. I will share it with you if you just pay the tax OK just send it via western union OK ?

Question!!! Just why would he hide the money and the diamonds in a package and not simply bring them with him ??? No wonder people keep trying to scam people as long as there are people like yourself about!

Yes I understand that part but if the parcel didn`t arrive like you said how do you know its a scam and that the money and diamonds were not there? Of course it sounds like a scam but there is no proof just your assumption right?

Just smelt off from the start she said the BF was from Manchester when i spoke to him he was Scottish. The web site for the currier looked ok but i had never heard of them before.

When the parcel was in KL that's when they wanted paying for the duty/tax and in $ not B

She did say that she had not know him long. So it would be strange to get sent 15k in the post.

what is the site for the courier company?

also was she issued with a tax invoice? and if the parcel was coming to Thailand, Tax would have to be paid here and not KL?

cheers

Read this exact scam in some Thai fiction book.. One of those money number one / expat adventures type thing years and years ago.

Amazing that it could still be being attempted considering the age of the story..

I presume she has reported the fake courier company ?? Because they have to be in on the scam.

Cant remember the web site of the currier something like diplomatic air curriers. Will post it when the girl gets back from BKK.

That's what rose my suspicion wanting her to pay before it got to BKK

Not sure if she has reported it yet but will make sure she dose when she gets back from BKK. She should have the account details of the currier where she was going to send the money.

If it's a scam and it involves a currier it must be tied in with the Pattaya beach road tailors. :o

Sorry, I'll get my coat.

Its up to you what you chose to believe. Just telling like it is.

Come on my fellow TV member, "If you smell a rat there is normally is one there". It's called gut insticnt. Maybe your friend is genuine, but her friend might not be. The friend may rip her off, you'll feel bad, prehaps for good reason, you will take care of your friend because most times that is what friends do. What ever is going on you may never know. I would like to think that your friend is all good and her friend is taking advantage of her relationship with you knowing she will altermately be Ok because she has told him you are a "good man??"

What ever the outcome, Best of luck and keep us posted
