What Is Electrolytes?

Featured Replies

What exactly are electrolytes? They write them on isotonic sport drinks. I have this delusion that whenever I sweat alot I have to replenish my electrolytes.

Just heard a fascinating lecture the other day about Sidney Ringer and his experiments with guppies.

It's not a delusion. If you sweat a great deal you do indeed lose both sodium and potassium, which are the electrolytes usually being referred to. (Electrolytes are simply atoms or molecules with an electrical charge, but in this context generally mean sodium and potassium which are present in the blood plasma and cellular fluids in electrolyte form).

Sports drinks contain these. So does green cocunut water and the nam minao and nom som sold in street stands everywhere (in fact the Thai habot of adding a dash of salt to these makes perfect sense!)

I saw interesting video on youtube, By using a onion and a sports drink (with electrolytes) you can actually get enough charge too chard and ipod.

So he basically Soaks a onion in Gatorade (With Electrolytes) sticks the USB staright in the onion and the other side into his ipod and like magic it starts too charge....Very interesting!

You can buy sachets of powdered rehydrants that dissolve in water and are much better, in my opinion. Much cheaper than the commercial sport drinks
