Uk Settlement

Recommended Posts

We didn't use an agent. Again, just follow all the instructions and double-check the check lists they provide, fasten safety belts and enter the rollercoaster.

We had loads of photos from our village wedding the year before, and I got a letter from my boss saying how I'd been bending everyones ear about my wife in Thailand for so long would they please just give me a visa and let everyone get some work done (or words to that effect).

We applied for a settlement visa on March 23rd. Today we heard we have been successful. I feel for everyone out there because I know what it's like. The stress starts to kick in and as the weeks go by, you start to wonder if they have lost your application or they are lining you up for a refusal. The last 24 hours is agonising. For what it's worth, I emailed the VFS on June 10th saying I was concerned and offering any assistance. I got a reply saying the application was with the embassy.

I faxed both embassy numbers (given on this thread) on Wednesday night, and again on Thursday morning in case the previous fax hadn't got through. I pointed out how long we had been waiting, and again asked them to contact me if I could be of assistance with their inquiry.

Late Thursday my wife got the sms. Today she opened the envelopes and found we had approval for herself and her daughter. I have no idea if the embassy reacted to the fax, or if it was just a co-incidence.

This forum has been of real assistance to me, but it's also bitter sweet. When people who apply after your date get approval, you can't help wonder what's wrong with your own case. It adds to the worry. But hopefully my case proves there is no connection between a long wait and rejection.

Best wishes to those who are contesting rejection, to those facing the long wait, and especially to Chewy and his partner.

Very good news Pudsey, congrats to all three of you, hope your future together is a long and happy one.

Chew/Pudsey - got to admit your tolerance levels are amazing. Don't know your individual circumstances, but are there any legal recourse here? I'm no legal expert......staying in LOS, extending rental periods, missed job opportunities or lost job opportunities, extra cost, re-arranging flights etc. especially for those above the 12 week period. Just a thought??

Hi my Wife and step daughter applied for settlement 2nd July so we have started the long wait!

Have the applications slowed down now as not many in June and none so far (except us now) in July?

Could we please be added to the list of worried people :)

Hi all.

Thank you Mikeyp for your comments and advice. I sent 2 emails to the embassy, no reply to the first and i waited about a week. I then sent the same email. I got a reply in less than 24 hours. This is the reply (cut and pasted from the email).

Dear Mr.Taylor,

In reply to your email of 7 July concerning the above applicant's settlement visa application.

Please be inform that during the busy period settlement application will take longer than our aimed processing time. The current processing time for settlement visa application is around 3 months from submission date.

I am sorry I am unable to send you a more favourably reply.

Yours sincerely

UK Border Agency

British Embassy Bangkok

Lumpini Pathumwan

I hope this helps anyone. To me it's just another fob off. But least it's a reply. Also it looks to me like the person that wrote the email is not english/british or they just don't care. Sorry venting again.

Good luck to everyone and congrates to everyone who has received there visa.

It's just a bog standard reply probably sent by a clerk, and whilst it's of no help whatsoever at least it shows they actually read the e-mails, though they may just as well set up the reply on an out of office feature.

just wondering how many of us used a visa agent ? i know it make no difference to outcome just curious thats all

thanks Alan

Sucessfull DIY application :)

If you do your homework there is no need to use an agency. Collecting the evidence required is the hardest part, amd even if u you use an agency you still have to provide them with the evidence.

Would be interested to learn a bit more about your wife's experience at Heathrow, was the Border Control particularly busy with long lines or did they give her a hard time?

The most important thing is she is home now and you can get on with your lives.

I wish you both every happiness.

Indeed.

The last time (May 2009) I arrived at LHR, alone, it was about 90 minutes between the plane landing and my clearing customs. Most of that time was spent in the baggage hall waiting for my luggage to show up on the carousel; it seemed as if mine was the last to be taken off the plane!

Flew out to Bangkok 1st of this month and we headed back together on the 9th......... At Immigration in BKK was cheeky and asked if it was ok to go through Thai Passport desk with my wife.... no problem - but you should have seen the looks I got from the Foreign Passoport queues!!!! They were queued about 20 deep on each desk!!! :D

Flight back from BKK via Dubai was full. At Manchester we went straight to the Non EU queue and was at a desk within 2 minutes, had both Passports and TB Certificate ready, got a nice smile off the Immigration Officer, MrsFiend was passport and visa was swiftly checked and we were soon on our way to collect our luggage.

MrsFiend is starting to settle in, but she is waking up at 5AM........ and me with her!!!! Hope her body clock adapts soon....... as I would like a lie-in one day :D

hi chaps,

We applied for my step-daughters settlement visa on the 27th of May thinking we had plenty of time for her to receive the visa before travelling with her mum to the UK on the 1st of August.

I now realise after reading this forum that the process time is taking so long and she maybe won't get the visa in time.

Our travel agent in Bangkok will keep the ticket for her until Friday, then we will have to pay for the flight or give the seat up. My wife is on holiday in Thailand for three weeks and has to return on that date.

My step-daughter is 11 years old and will not be able to travel alone.

Do you guys think there is any chance of her receiving the visa before that date and go ahead and buy the ticket?

I will be gratefull for any views on the matter.

cheers

corrie

It depends on how quickly the visa section are clearing the backlog, I'm afraid.

I wouldn't pay for the ticket until you know you have the visa; unless you have the option of changing the flight date.

If your wife has to return first, then it is possible to arrange with the airline for her daughter to be escorted and looked after during the flight. See this thread.

Thanks oldgit, she is due on the 4th October, so this week will be running around to find a GP etc. Oh, and the sister in law is coming over a Visit Visa in September.......need to think about applying soon. Maybe I'll start a thread, "Visit Visa....How long have you been waiting".

Heathrow - the wait was down to the fact that everywhere was rammed. As soon as I got to the Arrivals at T3 I knew it was bad news. Last time I picked the Mrs up on a VV I had no problem getting a front row place on the rails. This time it was about seven deep. The Mrs said it was very busy at Immigration. When she eventually got to the desk no hassels at all. A couple of questions, checked the TB certificate and through.

A further delay was at customs. The Mrs always gets stopped for the bag search......the chillies and lemon grass survived. :)

You need to be very careful about booking a ticket online if you are paying with your credit card and not travelling, there have been a number of stories about people being denied boarding in such circumstances.

There are ways round this so check it out.

I was half expecting getting pulled, I got pulled last time. MrsFiend bought over a bag of her mums curry spice packed in hand luggage as it looks a bit like a dodgy substance, and of corse I was over the limit on tobacco products.

Was asked about how many ciggies we had and was honest - 700+ between the 2 of us..... kept quiet about the 25 tobbaco pouches I had...... They x-rayed the bags and then said don't do it again next time you fly...... Didn't even ask about the curry spices........

Looks like as long as I am honest they let me away with it.... that's 3 times I have been let off with excess! :)

Thanks for your advice theoldgit, I know it seemed a silly question but i have heard of some stories , the same as you have warned me about , i think i will just get her to book her own flight from Bangkok, its not about the price but maybe its safer that way,Thanks

Added you to the list.

As for eTickets, as long as her passport number is on the eBooking there isn't normally a problem about not having a printed eTicket. Most of the time they just ask for my passport and don't even look at my eTicket.

Did have one problem booking her ticket.- I booked MrsFiends ticket from the UK, had a slight problem with the bank clearing the paymment at first but once I cleared it with the banks security section they allowed payment to go through. One thing they did ask for the card for was for the card to be presented when checking in - wasn't a problem for me as I was travelling with her.

I believe with Emirates there is the option where you can pay for the flight by Paypal.

Another alternative is to go to the UK airport to pay for the ticket. As long as they can verify it is really you who is paying for the ticket then they will accept the booking. And the bank shouldn't have a problem paying out to the UK office of the Airline

Thanks for your advice theoldgit, I know it seemed a silly question but i have heard of some stories , the same as you have warned me about , i think i will just get her to book her own flight from Bangkok, its not about the price but maybe its safer that way,Thanks

I booked online from uk with a thai/farang travel agent (www.moxtravel.com). No problems, paid with my cc online, mrs travelled alone from bkk.
