Thailand arrests Malaysian in credit card hacking scheme

BANGKOK: -- Police have arrested a Malaysian man suspected as a gang leader who hacking details and producing fake credit cards and automatic teller machine cards which have caused damages to genuine holders of over Bt100 million in the past.

Kok Mun Chiang, a 39-year-old Malaysian national, was apprehended at a hotel in Chiang Mai municipality on Wednesday as he allegedly hacked credit and ATM card information belonging to a construction businessman, police said.

Also seized was a laptop computer, ATM slips for money transfers and a notebook containing a list of credit card numbers allegedly in the suspect’s possession. They said bank account books showed that Mr. Kok and his accomplices had money deposited at banks of about Bt112 million.

According to police, Mr. Kok confessed during questioning that he and his accomplices sold information to networks in Malaysia and more than 10 European countries for Bt20,000 each. The buyers then would notify him in return and assigned him to counterfeit particular credit and ATM cards.

Police said they initially charged Mr. Kok of counterfeiting electronic cards and that consequently he faces maximum imprisonment of five years and a fine of Bt100,000.
