My firewall server at the facility I'm at has a direct 1GB fiber connection to the campus backbone. There are actually two fiber links from the campus to Bangkok - CAT at 192Mbps and Uni-net at 198Mbps for just under 400Mbps aggregate. I feel happy with my 2 Mb CAT connection, I download more movies and serial I can see and I watch my football every sunday with some streaming website. Sure, 4 Mb better, but what for 50 ??? Personally I have my doubts. Why not? PCIe bus can handle 1GB per second. Ethernet card (Host Bus Adapter) of 100 Mbps is merely 12.5 MBps, if we assume no collisions and IP packets are bumper to bumper. BTW, I have been (everyone is) on 100 Mbps for 6 years now in Japan, 1200B per month, includes IP phone number for my land line (no PC needed to make calls, just my regular landline phone), heavilly discounted international calls to anywhere. 100Mbps - what for? For <deleted>. Absolutely nothing I need works better now than over 56Kbps modem back in stone age Australia. Small wonder Kevin Rudd (Oz PM) has stopped talking about high speed Internet for everyone. Of course, someone must have told him it's a load of useless <deleted>, just look how high speed Internet has helped growth in Korea or Japan. With 224kBs to download a couple of movies, my 2Mbs TOT connection satisfies me. 50Mbs would fill up my HD faster than I want. I can't even be bothered to upgrade to True's 8MB package for a couple of hundred baht more, and it's not just because I have serious doubts getting anywhere near that speed. Downloading more series and movies than I can watch already so a bigger pipe would not make all that much difference. If you are too far ahead of the curve, then services and international lines that can make use of your connection are basically not around yet. Once the majority has 50mbps it will be a necessity to make use of all the new stuff that requires loads of bandwidth but meanwhile being somewhere in the middle is totally OK. Main improvements I would pay for right now: - Shorter lag time. This is what makes the internet in the west seem 100x faster. There is no wait. Unfortunately, that's not something that can be improved easily. Signals just travel a long ways, and it takes time even at 2/3 of the speed of light. - Stable connection. Do you really get that speed when surfing normally? I had a 50Mbit connection in the USA, and it delivered maybe 10Mbit or so real speed - could be that it was a server limitation of course. But I was also on a 10Mbit home DSL which never delivered more than 2Mbit under normal circumstances, and only very rarely went up to 6Mbit. I think they throttled traffic selectively, actually. For websites, you wouldn't notice the difference between 2 and 10. For bittorrent, it was throttled to 2Mbit. And I am pretty sure for any kind of "DSL Speed Test" website, there would be no throttling at all. I have a master in CS (1998) and 11 years of practical experience which includes developing software for Apple Computer and at the time hot startup companies in silicon valley, plus the pragmatic programmers book on my bookshelf Well I don't even know if CMU has a CS course...
