I'd an accident and although i can walk around with crutches - but I don't think I can manage a long trip out of the country (or even the flight, unless I go business class or disability seats?!).

I'm on a tourist visa, can any one suggest what I should do? The obvious is to get a medical certificate from the doctor, but I think the immigrantion will still only give me a 2 weeks extension. I'm not that mobile, so I'm wondering if I should over-stay and than report it to the immigration when I'm ready to leave the country?

Or I should contact the embassy etc..

please advise :o

Have you already extended the Tourist Visa for 30 days?

As you said you will need a Certificate from the doctor then Immigration can grant extensions.

Do not overstay. Never a good idea.

I know an expat who was suffering from cancer and getting treatment at one of Thailand's best hospitals--arguably the best. His visa was running out.

His doctor, one of the best in Thailand, wrote him a letter stating that he needed to stay in Thailand for treatment.

He took the letter to immigration in Bangkok. What did our thoughtful immigration friends do? They told him to leave the country within a few days because he could get treatment in his own country.

Terrible? Heartless? Thoughtless? Inhumane? Yes on all accounts.

Good luck getting an extension based on an illness in Thailand.

If you indeed can not travel you can obtain extensions of stay until able to do so. I am not sure what visa you have (tourist is normal 60 day stay with a 30 day extension possible for most countries). An extension without specific cause is limited to 7 days. But with medical paperwork and exam by Immigration doctor extensions are available.

The above posters example has nothing to do with your situation - that was someone "thinking about treatment" who could easily leave and obtain a new entry.

Although, the above said, it does seem you could probably make a visa run to Vientiane for a tourist visa it you want some extra time here. Border crossing would only be 15 days but visa would give you a longer stay.

I had sudden back surgery at Christmas in Ubon. The day I went under the knife was the day my tourist visa expired. While my wife was waiting for me to come out of the op she got talking to a lady whose husband was also having surgery. She mentioned to her my visa problem and the lady said she knew someone at the local immigration so she took my passport and 1,000 baht and came back 45 minutes with a 90 day extension for me!

You got a 90 day extension on a tourist Visa? Tourist Visa extensions are 30 days.

Or are you on a non immigrant O extension and you mean that somebody else did your 90 day report?

Actually all legal extensions of stay cost 1,900 baht so something appears amiss.

Yes, that's why I think MeMock is confused about what Visa or extension he had. And so most likely it was the 90 day report that anybody can do on his behalf and the kind lady pocketed 1000 Baht for 45 minutes work.

I've got a medical certificate from the doctor from the hospital, it says:

"Open fracture tibia, fibula (accident on 14th March), Rest till 13th June 2009"...

I didn't thought it's possible to get the visa extension because it says 'rest' instead of 'receiving treatment in the hospital, Thailand' etc... and my visa is extended 90 days from 5th April - 3rd July, 2009.

When I entered Bumrungrad a few years ago, a young lady came to my room and offered to take care of acquiring a visa extension for me. It wasn't necessary in my case but you might enquire from the facility you are using.

It sounds to me that there are some entrepreneurs in the Hospitals selling "visa services" for those who are incapacitated. Many of these "visa businesses" are based on corruption where they know someone in the Visa/Immigration/Embassy and where everyone gets their "cut" of the profits made from you, including the corrupt immigration officer who approves the visa for you.

When I went to the immigration HQ, I saw people getting visas for their loved 1s (and the actual person is not there). You'll just need a letter from a licensed practitioner to say that you're currently in treatment in the hospital, or not mobile.. you'll get a 30, 60, 90 days extension - depending on the condition. The 1,900THB is still required for extension, photos and photocopies of the medical certificate, visa page (the entry stamp), page of passport with your photo/ information on it...

Hospital services is probably free, I don't think there's much room for profit. Just pay for the extension fee (1,900THB) and a little bit of transport fee? If it's below 2,500THB - I think it's fair.

My experience today (although my visa starts from 5th April, but it's stamped on 9th April.. I don't understand why the difference in the days),

I don't doubt that happening, I should have been more clear. The particular lady who offered this service was a Bumrungrad employee.
