Sky Lanterns

Featured Replies

I am looking to bulk purchase around 30 sky lanterns for a private party - the big balloon type that you set light to the base block and they float off into the sky.

Doeas anyone know where I can buy them & more importantly , roughly how much they cost.

Thanks in advance.

... many shops at Chaweng Beachroad are selling sky lanterns.

Just go out and take a look.

Chayaphum

There was an ad in the classifieds advertising these from a factory in Chaing Mai (presumably they ship, or wait for a southerly wind...)

Search classifieds for 'lanterns'.

K.

There are two shops in Maenam close to the traffic lights where I bought them a few months ago, sorry can't remember the names.

One is on the ring road near the 7-11, a souvenir type store and the other is a general hardware store down the side street leading to the old pier. I think they were about 80 baht each and both gave a discount for bulk purchase.

I bought 10 last year from a lady in Chaweng, 45 bht each. Now here is the tricky bit, directions... :o

If you drive through the centre of Chaweng, as you approach the last set of stalls on your left, DVD'S VIDEO GAMES, the shop is on the right she sells lamps and fairy lights, no much help I know. The nursery or day play school is approx 100 yds past the shop.

I hope this helps

Before you buy these lanterns have you ever considered what happens to the remains of these lanterns when the fire goes out?

Take a look in land and you'll find them hanging from the trees all over the place and no doubt the ocean floor is covered with these rusting frames and un-spent fuel.

The island and sea has plently of litter and rubbish all over the place already please don't add to the problem just for the sake of looking at a pretty light in the sky for five minutes.

And imagine the boost in global warming because of the heat the lanterns produce! We should really tell the Thais to abolish this silly tradition to celebrate their new year! We gave them Christmas, Halloween and Valentine, producing so much garbage that we cannot tolerate a bit of wire and petroleum per person. :o

I remember on the first anniversary of the tsunami at Patong they had a rehearsal lantern release; there was a gentle offshore breeze and they floated out to sea - lovely*

On the actual night the breeze was onshore (nobody had the wit to check first) so the lanterns floated over the town and descended - they had to call a halt because of the fire risk :o

(* - yes, I know, probably strangled/choked innumerable endangered fish/sea birds/reefs/divers/refugees etc...)

No body is asking any Thai's to give up any traditions. :D (If you bothered to look at the original posting you will see that new year has already passed and the lighting of 30 lanterns is simply for a private party.) Its the dumb ass people who light those lanterns every night of the year on Samui that I object to and I am simply asking the original correspondent to consider what happens to 30 lanterns after they have been released. :D

From one "dumb-ass" to another - why dont you keep your eco-friendly plastic hippy views to your own threads. You have not contributed one valid point to my original request but I will do my best to keep on track when you post your :

"Should lanterns be confined to Thai New Year only ?"

"Should anyone lighting fireworks that are not related to blowing up Parliament be hung ? "

"The end is nigh, and its all Samuimole's fault "

ZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz !

I just bought a pack of 10 from Maenam company called "1staudiovisual" or something like that. You could reach them, they are nearby the orange bank or the international english. Oh good price just only 500 baht for 10. There number is ........

Please PM poster for phone #

OK, you're right on that, I overshot a little. :D

But still, IMHO if you look at the 'environmental footprint' most of us leave every day, remains of the lanterns are neglectible and outshone by the happiness they bring to the people that release and watch them.

BTW I hope OP has found a source for the lanterns and I wish you a great party. :D

Those lanterns suck.

For what it's worth, it's a custom from Northern Thailand and they have nothing to do with Southern Thailand or the islands.

I have never seen the locals send them off.

I have seen them leaving gobs of tar on the beaches.

I have seen them start fires and injure.

The spectacle is lame and silly for a Farang party.

Hopefully ya'll will eventually get over romanticizing Thai superstitions and outdated customs and stick to your own, whatever they may be.

So it's OK in northern Thailand? No Farangs there?

Can I send all the Halloween and Valentine shit that is forced on the people of the whole world back to USA then? Shall we start discussing Christmas and its mountains of garbage? And when in Thailand people should not be allowed to engage in Thai customs a little? Get a life.

i dont think you know, but they are made out of rice paper(the ones that i sell) and disintegrate when they get wet.the bamboo is natural and gets eaten, the wax burns down to o,nothing, ziltch,so where is the pollution problem,i care about the enviroment too,i would not sell them if they were bad.buy one and leave it outside when it rains, wake up in the morning ,hey its gone.

just to add a note to the eco complains, i remember i read an article regarding those lanterns and most of the components(if not 100%) are biodegradable.

opt for the version which is made from Saa-paper as in the "good old golden days" and some vine.... no "environmental harmful residue"!

And yes - the Chiang Mai source is by far the cheapest, concerning Ko Samui sellers...
