Is it really worth it?

Actually, that poses an interesting question. What if one was totally content in a human life. Why would they DESIRE to progress along the path toward nirvanna?

The more interesting question would be why would an elightened person DESIRE to progress along the path to Nirvana?

I'm certainly not "enlightened" but if I lived in the world, not attached to the world...seeking no gratification in the world, but merely watching it as an impartial observer...then where is the I that would DESIRE or seek. Where is the PROGRESS along a path in my world, and how is that to be measured?

Wouldn't the state of enlightenment give you these answers.

Perhaps if you were enlightened you would know.

I would ask "are you an arahat?".

If they said yes, I probably wouldn't beleive them. If they said no, then I might think they might be. But would an arahat have to answer truthfully about their attainments?

In one of his talks, Ajahn Chah says, "People ask me if I'm an arahant. How would I know?"

But my question was more about what people would ask a known arahant if they had the chance.
