Can any of you suggest the best credit card to carry when coming to Thailnd? ALSO... Are the stores there equiped to accept the RFD PayPass chips offered by many of the credit card companies here in the USA?

I know they ATM's now charge 150 baht and I plan to bring $2,000 USD Cash and have it exchanged for Baht at the airport money booths. I plan to have it locked in my hotel safe for the most part but my major curiosity is related to the best credit card and if they accept the PayPass system.

Thanks!

Get a Thai bank account. SWIFT money in. Leave what you don't need in LOS. No ATM charges.

I can't confirm that all ATMs from all banks charge Bt150. Why not email them and ask ?

I am only coming for vacation... I tend to bring my American Express with me but many hotels do not take it (I tend to move around a lot when in Thailand). I once had over $8,000.00 in unauthorized charges made on my card in Tokyo after first using the card on my first trip to Thailand.

I know that most credit cards now charge 3% to all charges outside of the USA.

3% ? I think that may be illegal.

Some places, like travel agents, will charge about 3-5% for CC and 5% for Amex but it is my understanding that if it is a CC (not Amex but they might do as well) then the card issuer will refun you and charge back the person who charged you the extra.

Decent hotels never charge for CC but not the sub Bt1000 a night brigade.

You may only come for vacation but what is there to stop you opening an account and transferring cash in just before you come next time ? No cost to run an account and Bt100 or so a year for the ATM card.

Thanks. I don't want a Thai Bank account. Also, Cici Bank and American Express both are charging 3% on any purchases made outside of the USA. I see that Chase Bank does the same on their credit cards as well.

I was not able to find out if Capital One does but they do not seem to offer speed pay and I enjoy that "Tap & Pay" feature. (I have a tag on my keyring that lets me just tap it and pay at gas stations and fast food locations as well as other stores here in the USA). It would be great to use tap and pay in Thailand and not have to worry about my Credit Card number being copied.

Dont you think it might be a bit dangerous leaving the Cash in your Hotel Safe?

I won't advertise that I have money in my safe. Most times I only carry about 10 to 20 Thousand Baht but this time I don't plan on using an ATM.

Also, I don't plan on having that much company in my room. I am only coming to relax, do some shopping and just take it easy.

Keep your money out of room safes in Thailand there's a thread on here about how the cleaners get in them in seconds.

You can use your card for cash at most banks over the counter for free & there is still 3 banks that give ATM access for free check out this thread.

Maybe you would be best opening an Account with Kasikorn on arrival its done in 20 mins with ATM card there & then & internet access within 24 hrs, put your cash in there after exchanging it in the bank for a better rate than you'll get at the airport then you have a Thai ATM to draw out your money.
