Acting AMLO Chief in hot water

The Justice Ministry plans to take disciplinary action against the acting Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) Chief for malfeasance in office for checking without proper authorisation the bank accounts of journalists, important national figures and former members of the opposition.

Justice Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga said yesterday that a committee would be set up to determine the disciplinary punishment against Seehanat Prayoonrat, AMLO Acting Secretary-General, once he receives the complete probe report from the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) on the matter.

The NACC has concluded that Police Colonel Seehanat, in his previous capacity as Director of the AMLO's Information Technology and Financial Investigation Bureau, together with Peeraphan Prempooti, in his previous capacity as AMLO Secretary-General, were involved in malpractices including the checking of bank accounts of about 200 members of the press, public figures, and former opposition members while Thaksin Shinawatra was still prime minister.
