B200m Investment In Tourism

The government will invest at least 200 million baht in the private sector to revive the tourism industry, Deputy Prime Minister Kobsak Sabhavasu said on Wednesday.

Mr Kobsak, chairman of the government's Tonkla Archeep employment project, said after signing a memorandum of understanding with the Federation of Thai Tourism Associations (Fetta) and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) that the 200-million-baht budget would be used for training in the tourism sector.

This investment would save the jobs of about 20,000 employees in the industry in danger of being unemployed this year, he said.

He predicted tourism would return to normal in October, the beginning of the usual, annual peak period.

The Tonkla Archeep project aims at training and job creation to help about 500,000 unemployed in the country.

Tourism and Sports Minister Chumphol Silpa-archa said the scheme would strengthen the tourism sector. His ministry was working Chinese authorities to attract more Chinese tourists.

Association of Domestic Travel (ADT) president Maiyarat Pheerayakoses said 250,000 employees in the tourism industry could be out of jobs this year if the government had done nothing.

Boy, does this need some explanation . How on earth does investment in training save jobs. Either you are going to turn them into teachers or pay them to study. But then it says investment in private sector, the only way you can keep the jobs is to subsidise the private sector so they can afford to employ the numbers.

Mosh, we both know what's happening to the West. Not pretty. They should concentrate on regional Asian tourism. The heady days of big spending farangs are dead and gone.

Anyone signing up gets 4,800Bt/month for a max. of 3 months. So must be short courses.

Wonder what you can learn in 3 months. If people have been in employment how is signing up for this going to stop them from losing their jobs. Can they just disappear off for 3 months to survive on 4800Bt/month.

Its very unclear where the money goes and where its from.

Also 3 months won't take you up till the next high season if there is one.

Sally my dear, in the crazy world we now find ourselves living, nothing makes sense.

I will say, from a global perspective 200million Baht is the average Brits mortgage on a 3-bed semi in Luton.

GM etc, the banks, every other criminal organisation including the disgraced Houses of Parliament make Thailand's bailouts look like the average Thursday morning at the DSS office in Dartford.
