With no expereince of this kind of thing at all, I would have to say that if you work and networked for the embassy in Africa much like any international company you could probably after time manage to get placed in the country you wanted.

Why don't you enquire with them about this?

I have a future opportunity to work for two years at the US Embassy in Senegal, Dakar. Do you think I could parlay this experience into eventual employment at the Embassy in Thailand ? I'm asking from a networking perspective not job specific.

It would probably depend on the employment. Remember that most Embassy assignment is by tours of a few years rather than a permeate job.

Even better...

but unlike Burma a certain Ex Prime Minsisters son was the "Man with a Plan" :D

has it all worked out...or so he thought :D

PS anyone in the market for an old DC3,couple of dozen parachutes, some K rations and and 20 or so English > Equatorial Giny phrase books. :o

Equatorial Guinea gained independence in 1968 after 190 years of Spanish rule.

A tiny country, composed of a mainland portion plus five inhabited islands, is one of the smallest on the African continent.

President OBIANG NGUEM MBASOGO has ruled the country for over two decades since seizing power from his uncle, in a 1979 coup.

Although nominally a constitutional democracy since 1991, the 1996 and 2002 presidential elections - as well as the 1999 legislative elections - were widely seen as being flawed. ....does this sound familar :D

The president controls most opposition parties through the judicious use of patronage. ........now you dont say :D

Despite the country's economic windfall from oil production resulting in a massive increase in government revenue in recent years, there have been few improvements in the country's living standards.

What about a new Sky Train? eh./:D

:o

If you intend to make a carreer with the U.S. State Department you get promoted thru that organizaton.

You can request to be posted to any embessy in the world. Where you are actually posted is determined by seniority. The "good" posts are always had to get unless you are senior enough. I would expect Thailand is considered one of the "good" posts.

First you have to do your time in the "crap" postings. Mostly in Africa. There are a lot worse postings than Senegal to be found.

This only applies if you are a Department of State employee. If you are hired as an independent contractor, you are considered lower than pond scum.

:D
