Fashion trends.

You remember Teddy Boys? Mods? Punk Rock?

Parents thought that ridiculous too, but the kids like it. Their way or rebelling. Of making a statement.

I see nothing wrong with it, though I may not like it.

To right mate, don't forget probaby the most cringe worthy fashion trend of all time must of been the Bay City Rollers era :)

I actually found out where that "fashion" statement orginiated from. In U.S. prisons, it used to be that when someone wore their pants down low, pass their butt, it was a sign that they "belonged" to someone, if you know what I mean. They were somebody's bi...well you know the word. Now, with enforced universal prison uniforms it has gone away. When I explained that to a kid back in the states, he just looked at me, and I explained, "think about it, why would somebody put their pants down like that, it is called advertisement and owndership." Maybe someone should tell these thai kids that and we can nip it in the bud....

You couldn't be further from the truth. It has never been associated with 'belonged' to someone. It did, however, foster itself from prison life. Often, inmates were issued pants too big for them (due to lack of sizes available) and since prisoners are not issued belts, they would be constantly holding up their pants with one hand.

Called "Sagging", many young males (sometimes females) will don this type of fashion made famous by rap artists in the 1990s. On the cover of the rap group Kris Kross CD, the artists are wearing sagging jeans backwards. This was also a fashion for a bit and has since evolved into a fashion that even state legislators have been unable to control within the court systems. Its often a sign of 'wannabees' to be a rap artist or gangbanger. But many kids are just trying to be cool.

I do, however, think its pretty silly. But, that's my opinion.

Given that george lives in Thailand and is presumably talking about Thai youngsters..... seems Thailand related to me.

In London in the early 80's Electro bought all ethnic groups together as one, black kids, Asian kids and white kids on street corners popping to the latest Morgan Khan's Street Sounds label Electro Album, great times as a kid then. How things have changed over the years its such a shame races don't mix like they did back then. Hip Hop grew into a gangster rap shit about how much money they have or how much gold they got, thats not how it used to be in the beginning.

Fashion of course changed over the years as well with this scene and like George pointed out youngsters wearing trousers half way down their arse thinking there some sort of gangster from the 'hood' as you Americans put it.

For me though without a shadow of a doubt the best fashion of all time was the 60's UK Mod scene. Driving around on a Lambretta TV or SX200 dressed in an expensive suit and fashion obsessed. Unfortunately for me, i was born 30 years to late so didn't have the pleasure of experiencing the 60's.

I think fashion and music now is a load of crap but maybe thats because im getting old and for the kids with trousers down their arse they probably think their the <deleted> but didn't we all when we was a teenager or 20 something?

Its pretty passe in the US these days, only people still wearing it are the hiphop gangsta wannabees.....

Yes, and in the UK the wearer frequently affects a Jamaican accent. :-

Edit

and, I almost forgot, the "pimp roll" so well described in "Bonfire of the Vanities"

It maybe so, but i haven't read anything about Thai teenagers / youngsters in any of the posts.

There are no comparisons in any post between Thai/Western stuff and certainly no Thai stuff is mentioned.

This fashion is a Western thing and normally associated with young teenagers into the Emo or Scene fashion.

I haven't seen it in BKK yet.....

i susepect you are talking about those skinny jeans where the the back is very loose, but i still dont think underwear is exposed with that fashion style.

The first part of this is correct, unfortunately the second is not. It has less to do with 90s hip hop and more to do with late naughties indie music. They wear frighteningly tight black jeans and thick red chequered shirts, with leather straps around their wrists. It's like a combination of punk rock, farm wear and blatant homosexuality.

This is already quite a cocktail, but in the last couple of years they appear to have added an even more distressing ingredient in the form of the jeans falling down the backside. It's really quite stupid. At least in hip hop clothing it made sense, because all the clothes they wore were very loose, but these indie kids combine a loose belt with extremely tight jean legs. This is quite a difficult task, so the youngster in question will have to force his jeans down below his backside, where the waist of the jeans then digs in to his legs just below his butt cheeks. With this done, the tops of his legs are now kind of bound together by the jeans, and he has great difficulty walking with any degree of normality. The result is a penguin-like shuffle. It looks like really hard work.

Further to this, the indie kids also wear tight boxer shorts rather than the loose ones that were popular in the 90s, and they are usually white. That means that if you are too close to one of these creatures, not only can you see a clearly defined arse, but if you're very unlucky you might even see skidmarks. Thankfully this hasn't happened to me but I did once catch a rather pooey wiff from one of these people while walking in the local town...

I don't get it. After they hold up the liqour store, how can they possibly run from the cops with their pants down like that?

Just doesn't make sense. Sorta like Japanese Olympic sprinters wearing kimonos.

I asked a friend of mine " why are those coloured boys wearing baggy trousers " he replied

" because theyre knee grows "

How do the black kids run from the cops with their pants around their ankles?

Unbelievable. You thought you left the rap and gangsta attitude back in your home country, but apparently you've brought your shi**y attitude and bigotry to Thailand. Maybe you got run out of your country by the gangstas because of your racial comments. This forum is no place for this kind of hatred. Go drink yourselves into bigotdom in another forum.

My two cents worth.

You've gotta be kidding me? The "knee" comment is racist, but the others are not. The sagging jeans trend did originate in the US connected with hip-hop/rap and is mostly associated with black rap artists and black prison/gangster culture. On top of that, I've seen dozens of vids on television where some guy commits a crime dressed as such, tries to run, and gets caught precisely because his baggy pants are falling down!! I'm sure you could probably find some on youtube if you look. Epic irony.

Thankfully, this trend has pretty much run its course for the mainstream of the US. There are always holdouts, but at least ALL the kids aren't doing it now.

Kids have always pushed the envelope in trying to deifne themselves, and part of that is in the clothes they wear.  It sets them apart from their parents.  For me, it was Oshkosh overalls where your girlfriend embroderied them with various patterns.  And we wore somewhat effeminate button-up shirts under these overalls.

Most young fashions have tended to highlight the youthful vitality of the young body--mini-skirts, hotpants, tight jeans, spandex, etc.  So the loose hanging-off-the-butt pants has gone against this trend.  And for that matter, as a man who sort of likes to girl-watch, if I can seem so misogynist, the fashion designer who pushed this style for young women needs to be horsewhipped (along with the person who invented those bubble-type dresses so popular here last year.)  But the person who invented the tight, low-riding hip-hugger jeans and bare midriffs which were in fashion two years ago (sort of like the photo above of the bowling woman) deserves a Nobel Prize!  :)

Texpat, now that have posted some hetero bowling porn, does that mean I can post some lovely man butt pics as well? No, you say? Double standard?

This is a good example of a minority group member getting all worked up over nothing. Jingthing, get real, I would hardly call it 'porn' theres plenty of males in previous pictures. :)

From what ive been told jt, you are known to walk around with something that resembles a backside protruding from your shirt collar, whats that about? :D:D
