Mounting A Gps Device On A Scooter

Featured Replies

Has anybody a solution or sample - how to mount a GPS device on a Scooter. My Garmin device includes parts for mounting on a handle bar, but that is only for big bikes. Scooters have their handle-bars covered with big plastic layers.

My bike is a Yamaha Nuovo. The GPS is a Garmin Zumo 400.

Thanks

I am unfamiliar with the 400 mount.. But can it be adapted to work down off the helmet hook mount point.. Making something up off that screw point to the garmin mount would be my best guess..

No, it is too low. I try to attach a photo. I will see what my dealer come up with. Thanks

Bit too prominent for me.. I would prefer low down and out the way..

But hey each to thier own, if it works for you and you like it up in the line of sight well done.

Here are some pictures of mine. I found it a bit annoying at first to have on here, but I got used to it really fast. Garmin makes a "rail mount adapter" that I bought in Chiang Mai Pantip at the Eagle GPS store. It works with all Garmin GPS devices, or so it says. :)

you can also get a mount to bolt on the mirror mounts. and i believe that gadget trend also do a special scooter mount.

This is now my final mounting solution.

I gave all parts to my Yamaha dealer. They made an excellent job. I like the position very much. I can adjust and even remove the Zumo mount when parking. It is all very sturdy.

Now the GPS guides me savely through the most complicated street system of Bangkok. And I can more concentrate on the traffic.

BTW the Yamaha Square Shop in Ratchayothin are now specialised in assembling GPS on Scooter and Motorcycles. Because after my installation 2 other customer ordered a GPS mount.

How much was the accessory and the fitting charge?

cheers

john

Can you give the GPS co ordinates for the shop and price perhaps??

most of the accessory was part of the Garmin device. The fitting charge was 800 Baht plus a tip for two employees, who picked up my bike in the morning and returned it same day at 3 pm. :)

The Yamaha shop told me they did't do it themself, they gave it to another shop. I will get the address tomorrow, when I do my 1000 km oil change.

Sorry, I have not figured out how to convert 'Favorites' to 'Coordinates'. :) If you know how to, let me know.

The Yamaha Square shop is close to the Elephant Building in Ratchayothin.

RTFM :D

I can scoff! I'll be in the same boat soon as I'm getting a 60Csx in Aus next month.

Aussies, did you know that you can order stuff over the Net and not pay any duty or VAT to Customs if value under A$1000?

Maybe worth a new topic? :D

That's a splendid idea. On this forum, the GPS forum, let's give co-ordinates as often as possible when a particular place is mentioned.

With some GPS navigators it can be tricky to extract co-ordinates from the device. Let's use this forum to help each other how to do it.

Suggestion to Prepress: start a new topic with a title something like "Garmin <insert model name>: How can I extract co-ordinates from Favorites?"

I have just bought a Honda Phantom and I would like to mount my Garmin Nuvi 260W on the bike.

I have spoken to the Garmin sales people in Bangkok and they don't make a mount and I also spoke to a lady at the Eagle GPS store who didn't really understand what I wanted. I suspect it was more my fault than hers but she said that they didn't have any.

Where do I go from here?

:)

Bill,

go to the amazon.com site, garmin accessories.... and a short name will pop up as a manuf of bolt ons for Garmins.

Sorry I can't remember the short name. :) <deleted> old age.....!

Ram should make a mount that would suit, check out the link below for Gadgettrend in BKK, they have a mount specifically for scooters also.

Thanks for that gadgetrend link as I will be down in BKK in a couple of weeks time at the British embassy which is not so far away and I am staying out at Sukhumvit 101/1 so easy for Thong Lor as well.

I spoke to K Orathai at Gadgetrend on Thong Lor but she had sold out of the parts I wanted so I ordered them.

It took about 3 weeks and cost me 2,065 baht including postage by EMS

Dear Sir

Ram-mount for your GPS

1. Ram-Hol-GA25U 390 baht

2. Ram-B-238U 300 baht

3. Ram-B-201U 650 baht

4. Ram-B-231Z 675 baht

5. Transportation expenses (EMS) 50 baht

Total 2,065 baht

They were delivered on Sunday evening around 6pm. :):D :D

I fitted it this morning and went for a test run and the only 2 problems I have are

1) I cannot hear the directions at 100 kph wearing my helmet

2) I now need to find a way of charging the GPS on the move.

Find a bike shop that can install a cigarette lighter holder on the bike than use the car cigarette lighter charger. That's the easy part. I don't think your GPS has an audio socket so you won't be able to use an ear phone. Higher end GPS units have audio jacks.

Thanks for the advice Gary A

I am not really bothered about listening to the GPS as I can see the screen anyway but I will probably have to go up to Khampaeng Phet for the lighter socket unless I see one at the market in the next few days as KP has the nearest car dealers to me.

Like you I live way out in the sticks and sometimes when I take my son to the school bus in the morning all I can hear is the birds, bees and the bus about 1 km away.

Also as I am old and retired now I have the time to watch the butterflies and smell the flowers.

It is wonderful.

Does anyone know if the Garmin 760 has an audio jack?

Does anyone know if the Garmin 760 has an audio jack?

Yes it does. It also has the FM transmitter that will play through your vehicles FM radio. The FM transmitter works great if you stay in a limited area and have an unused FM frequency. Unfortunately if you are traveling, there are so many FM stations that you will pick up WAY too much noise. The audio jack works much better.

The FM receiver is useless in Thailand;

Thanks Gary. :)

Hi samurai,

the mounting of my Zumo was done via my Yamaha dealer by Mr. Dear. He did a very good job. The mounting parts come with the Garmin Zumo.

You can see it on my post #7.

Unfortunately Khun Dear does not speak english. Call him at 08 4196 2586.

New link to Aus Customs

"All goods (except for tobacco products and alcoholic beverages) may be imported duty and tax free if their value is $1,000 or less."

BTW, if you email Garmin USA your enquiry is passed on to gpscity.com gpscity is a good alt to Amazon.

Sorry, I have not figured out how to convert 'Favorites' to 'Coordinates'. :) If you know how to, let me know.

There is no direct approach for that task.

1. First, get into simulation mode (Spanner > System > GPS Mode > GPS Off).

2. Then, you need to simulate the location to the Favorites item's position (Where to? > Favorites > select the item > Map > Set Loc). At this point, the vehicle icon will be placed there. Take care not to touch the screen (before selecting "Set Loc"), otherwise the simulated location will be set elsewhere (where the cursor/arrow is pointed at).

3. Finally, get the coordinates (Where to? > Coordinates). The coordinates stated there is the one for the simulated location=selected Favorites item. If you'd further selected Next > Save, along with the name for the Favorites, there would also be the coordinates stated within the saved Favorites item.

Edit: Oops, now only I realized that I was responding to an older post, sorry. :D

The question was raised about the coordinates for the scooter place. I took the following coordinates from Google Maps.

13.826086N, 100.567221E

I added the N for North and E for E.

I don't have a GPS on my cycle, yet. So, I can't double check the coordinates, but they look reasonable.

Hope this helps. :)
